Why the media sucks… 03.15.07 at 11:58 am ET
By Curt Schilling

Gotcha!

Seriously though. I had some discussions over the past week or two about my contract situation and figured the best way to explain it clearly would be here.

So I think the best way to do that is explain exactly how everything happened and where it stands today.

The easy parts.

1) It was no mystery, since I’d said it since day 1 of signing the contract back in 2003 with Boston, 2007 was to be my final season (well 2006 was if we hadn’t won the World Series, but we did). Shonda and I, and our kids had talked at length about where and what we were going to do after the season was over but non-retirement had never really become a topic. At some point last year she and I began discussing, or mulling over, the thought of playing beyond 2007. We never talked at length or in depth but it was something we chatted about on and off during the year. 38 Studios became a reality and playing another year became less of an option at that point. The season ended and the winter came and almost went and a lot of things happened. The first was that physically I felt much better than I anticipated feeling, and the second was a talk with Shonda. In late January we spoke at length and both decided that if the good Lord found it in himself to keep me healthy I would not retire following the 2007 season. After a short discussion with the kids, who were ecstatic (though a bit put off since we promised them puppies when I retired) it became clear to me that this was the right thing to do.

2) I knew for a fact that this would catch the Red Sox off guard and so I made a call to Theo that night to inform him of the decision. I got the impression he was pretty fired up about it and we talked long enough for me to think that the contract situation was pretty much resolved and 2008 would be spent in Boston.

3) Not long after that I got word, and then Theo did, that someone in the media had found out and was going to talk about it. That’s when I spoke with D & C about going on their show to make the ‘announcement’. The main reason I felt that was the way to go was twofold really. They’ve been very good to me, and more importantly to ALS through the monies they’ve raised. Contrary to some writers beliefs I don’t get paid to appear on EEI, ALS does, and always has. Not to mention there have been additional monies raised through other things we’ve done on the show. Even though I don’t agree with them often (I think D and I have some differing opinions on politics) they’ve always been fair to me and I would like to think my teammates, for the most part. So the decision to either allow someone not in the know to leak it, or for me to be pro-active and much clearer on what had really happened was an easy one.

Now we fast forward a bit and we have what appears to be ‘controversy’ because the Red Sox do not extend my contract when alls said and done, and I am going to file for free agency at years end. Again contrary to ‘expert’ opinions and views this was never a ‘gun to the head’ situation, the Sox knew this and I knew it. It really was very simple for both sides. We spoke at length, Theo, Mr. Henry, Mr Werner and I all spoke at some point and at no time, and let me reiterate that, at NO time, were there ever any hard feelings, ill will, or loud exchanges.

The Red Sox owe me nothing. They’ve paid me over 40 million dollars for what amounts to two seasons worth of starts. They didn’t ask for a refund in ‘05 when I couldn’t get my mother out, and on top of that they’ve been respectful of my family at every turn.

I wanted to remain in Boston to finish my career, I made that clear to them. They made it clear to me that if it wasn’t for the money this would be a done deal. I get that, it’s not hard to understand. If I was to sign a 4 million dollar deal I’d be signed already. The 13 million we had talked about was money they were looking at as ‘available’, so this had changed their plans if they were to sign me.

Shonda and I have sold our homes in Arizona and are in the midst of selling our home in Philly as well. Medfield is where we have chosen to raise our children. The town is phenomenal and the people are as well. We feel the public school system offers our kids an enormous advantage and we want to be part of the community there.

That being said there’s been speculation that many ‘off the field’ things have made it so we can’t, or won’t play elsewhere. That’s just not true. The Red Sox know that at the end of spring training we will no longer discuss 2008 until after free agency becomes an option. While it may appear as if it’s a ploy, it’s not. One of the disadvantages to this market is the sheer volume of news, and what’s really news as opposed to what isn’t. I was very clear in that I would not allow this to be a story once we started playing games that count, the team, the organization and most importantly my teammates don’t deserve to be asked questions about something that has nothing to do with winning or losing ballgames, and that’s exactly where this would go.

The other was 38 Studios. People falsely thought that I needed to stay in Boston since the company is located in Maynard. One of the things I think I know about good teams, and good businesses is that one person can’t drive either. I think and know that my vision for 38 Studios and what we are going to become will be realized, and I also know that for that to happen there must be people in place to lead this company other than myself. Brett Close was my insurance. When 38 Studios hired Brett as President I lost all concern for having to be ‘in house’ 365 days a year for this company to become the multi-billion dollar behemoth it will be. I think people that are good to great leaders get that to be great you must surround yourself with incredibly talented, driven, honest, hard working, loyal, accountable people. Every member of this company to date is just that, and Brett adds that in spades as the President. So while it would be awesome to be able to be in Boston to help things along in ‘08, it’s not even remotely a hinderance if that does not happen.

Our first choice is Boston, the Red Sox know that, we know that. The team has decided that waiting and seeing is the approach to take (and I think many, if not the majority of fans would agree) with a 40 year old pitcher. While I can disagree all I want it’s not really relevant to the situation. I couldn’t for a second use the ‘they are disrespecting me’ or “They owe me” route. That’s disingenious at best and ridiculous at worst.

Am I disappointed? Sure, I’m human and I’d like to think they need me or want me enough to make this happen now. However I also realize that they, and the game, will go on just fine when I am gone. I’ve always needed the game a hell of a lot more than it needs me.

So there it is, and it really is that simple. A lot of times most of these situations are much simpler and never as complicated as the media would have you believe. I will get ready for the season, bust my ass to win one more game than everyone else in this rotation, to win another world series, and then the off season will arrive. When it does I will file for free agency at the appropriate time and if the Red Sox make the better all around offer then I will come back here for 2008, if they don’t, we won’t.

Oh and one more thing. To you Yankee fans. I won’t and never have offered up the “I wouldn’t go to NY” unsolicited. When this story first broke I was asked about the possibility of going to NY and I said I couldn’t make that move. I don’t hate the Yankees, far from it, but after what’s happened over the short period of time I’ve been in Boston, and given the fact that there are probably ten times more fans in NY that would not want me to wear the pin stripes, as opposed to those that would, I couldn’t. So rest easy, it won’t happen.

Someone mentioned that not allowing the Yanks to get into the bidding would mean less money in the end as a dumb reason to say this, I will say this. If I am concerned about my contract next year being for 20 million per, as opposed to 15 or so per, then I’ve made some immensely bad financial decisions in life, which is not the case.

No, I couldn’t go there for many of the same reasons Mariano said the same thing. While he has his entire first ballot Hall of Fame career to look back on and make that decision, which I am sure gives him far more reason to not make the move, I feel much the same way.

In the end it is simple. In 2008, if by the Lords Grace I am healthy, I will be pitching somewhere I want to be for a team that has a great shot at winning a world series. In the meantime it’s all about trying to get the second one in four years here.

    Curt,

You are an amazing gentleman. State what you feel because you know that money isn’t everything, your family is. Yet another “Schilling Thought” for everyone to think about. Have a blessed day my friend and I will be praying for you and your families decisions.

  2. mcq0823 Says:

    Curt,

Don’t you feel your chances at the Hall of Fame are better served staying in Boston?

I have to assume your desire to make the hall of fame played a small part in your decision to return. Finishing your career in a market like Boston would only enhance your resume, especially if you help bring another title to Boston, or have a few good seasons.

If you want to play for a contender, if you want to enhance your HOF resume, and want to be appreciated, it’s Boston.

  3. **Dawn** Says:

If it’s possible, I have even more respect for you now. I will hope that everything aligns to allow you to finish out your career in Boston, but if that’s not what is in the future for you, Curt, I will wish you the best & root for you where ever you end up.

    Curt

If you had to pick a prospect the Red Sox have to be a future star, who do you pick? (Lester, Dice K don’t count)

  5. tomafield Says:

Guess that says it all, then, doesn’t it?

Next step: Print up business cards to hand out every time you get asked about your contract situation this season. The message on the cards? “We’ll talk in November.”

Hey, Opening Day at Fenway is less than a month away. Let’s play ball!

    best,

    Tom

  6. kinshane Says:

Schill-dog, don’t let ego drive the train. Is there really much of a difference between $5 million and $13 million? $8 million is the obvious answer, but what cand you do with $13 million that you couldn’t do with $5 million?

  7. seanface Says:

    Hey Curt,

Any chance you could work out a deal like Andy Pettitte with a player option for next year with a gentlemen’s agreement that you will decline it if you are unhealthy at the end of the year.

Also I know how much you love to raise funds for ALS any chance that the team could sign you for say 5 million for next year and donate 8 million to an ALS organization. The 8 million wouldn’t count as payroll and not effect the salary cap, and we all know with the Matsuzaka bidding the Red Sox have more then enough money to pay if it doesn’t effect the cap. You get less money but you are still worth the 13 mil. I don’t know if that is illegal.

I hope something gets worked out!

    good luck this year

Curtis — You. Da. Man. I’ll confess I was a little peeved watching this play out in the media, but had to remind myself that CHB and Co. had precious little else to write about when Manny arrived on time(ish), Drew didn’t show up in a full body cast, and the Globe wasn’t offering Japanese lessons to its staff. See? Blogs are cool.

Oh, and if you re-sign with the Sox in ‘08, I’ll buy the puppies. Seriously.

  10. acefox1 Says:

    What an amazing post Curt.

This is why I am such a huge fan of yorus.

You don’t “send messages through the media.”

You don’t play the “They owe me some respect!” angle.

You don’t decide to just keep quiet and let the fans think whatever they are going to think.

You treat the fans fo the game with enough respect and intelligence to know that if you tell them what is going on, most of them will understand and appreciate it. I know that I sure do.

I think I’ve heard you spell this out before and I take your comments at face value so this confirms what I hoped was the truth. Again for that we the fans thank you.

You’re an amazingly rocking guy and we’re lucky as can be to have you on our team. I never let myself forget that you could have chosen to go to any team you wanted in 2003, including NY. I’ll always feel lucky and blessed that circumstances lined up just right for you to come to Boston.

You really do make the game much more interesting and entertaining. I hate even thinking of you not playing because the landscape of baseball looks mucyh less interesting and entertaining without you championing the fans hopes and dreams.

I know we’ll still have Big Papi to carry the torch and Papelbon looks like he’ll be someone with enough talent, intelligence and young-20’s-knucklehead-edness to carry on your tradition. :)

Thanks for spelling it all out and showing what’s on your mind and what your priorities are.

I also like either or both of the suggestions made by kinshane (Donation to ALS as part of your compensation) and seanface (Gentleman’s agreement).

What a great example that would set to other atheletes in all sports if you could negotiate that your contract would combine a salary for you and a donation to ALS. It wouldn’t be the first time you managed to blaze a new trail in relation to the CBA and I would only hope the Union and MLB would be okay with it. Of course that is contingent on you being okay with it as well.

Whatever you do Curt is fine with me. You’ve never done anything selfish and deserve whatever you want to get.

    Your biggest fan!

The media sucks? Tell that to your kids when you come home without the puppies you promised them. You sound like ARod, “the media sucks”. “They suck so bad that I’m a quote-machine”… “It’s their fault that I can’t just zip it and play baseball”…”The sky is falling”, said Chicken Little.

    Hi Curt,

Thanks much for shedding light on the situation with the Sox. This game is indeed a business, and both you and the team have legitimate interests. I am hoping it gets resolved so that you stay. But I know I am not alone in wishing you the best of success both this year and as you and your family go forward.

    Curt,

As I was trying to get my march madness picks in and read up on expert advice, I stumbled on an article that indicated you had a blog and it provided the link. I was reading it today for the first time and thought it was really neat that you are doing this. I have forwarded your URL to friends and family so they can enjoy reading it like I have.

Thank you for explaining your extension and free agency. I appreciate the fact that you are taking time out of your busy schedule to let fans, like myself, hear from ‘you’ and not through a third party. As a fan, you can only come up with conclusions based on what the media lets you hear. They are in total control of how one is perceived by what they choose to show and what is going to go on the cutting room floor.

I really hope you end your career in Boston which means staying healthy up and through 2008. Whatever you decide to do, I will still be a fan of yours wherever you choose to go. You are a class act.

Good luck this season! I hope to be able to come to a game at Fenway this year.

Just my interpretation for anyne that thinks Curt really meant the entire media sucks…

I think that the Gotcha at the beginning of this post shows that he was just joking about the headline. Curt has said many times that the media does mess up and distort a lot of stories and flat-out makes things up in some cases, but that there are plenty of people in the media that work hard to get the story right.

I could be wrong but that was my take on the headline.

  24. sigmapijiggy Says:

    Curt!

Why can’t you do one thing? Maybe it’d make the crap you’re gonna have to deal with just a little more bearable.

Would you say that you’re confident that you will be with Boston in ‘08?

(This isn’t a “promise”, just a simple statement about how you feel right now)

If you can say that, I think this would be a little less of a total disaster, although the media will continue to suck.

    Thanks

    Jon

  25. marsh18redsox Says:

    Curt,

First and most important, I hope you type fast and don’t type with two fingers b/c all this blogging would take forever haha

Second, I think its great what you and your wife do for ALS and Skin Cancer. I too do a lot of fundraising for cancer research (Jimmy Fund Walk and a local Oncology center I am a committee member) Its great to see someone with your status utilize this fame and raise money for such worthy causes. Having many people affected by cancer in my life, I truely thank you and your wife for your efforts (did you see that they may have found a gene at Dana Farber that can predict Skin cancer?)

Third, I can’t imagine going through contract negotiations!! When I heard you weren’t retiring I automatically assumed you would be with us beyond this year! I understand this is a business, I understand the game very well etc but I have learned, as a fan, you can’t get too attached to players because they come and go unfortunately. What Wake has done is basically unheard of now, I feel as though teams are building for the future instead of appreciating what you have in the present or even the next year!! Well I feel that has been the case since 2004!

Fourth, Medway is a very nice area. My Great Aunt (who also died of cancer) lived pretty close to where you live now. They must love having your family in town :)

Thanks for making this situation clear to everyone!!

As I was reading this “Welcome to the Jungle” came on the radio and I got goosebumps just thinking about the upcoming season and how awesome it is to be at Fenway park. I think this year we have a stellar group of starting pitchers and hope that everybody has a great and healthy year, you included.

I hope that they sign you next year, just wouldn’t be the same without you.

Medfield is a great town and should be honored to have you as a resident.

  27. goldsteingonewild Says:

Can’t help but repeat the others: it’s fantastic to get your views unfiltered.

    A) Prediction: You’ll not only get your mother out this season, but some mothers in the Bronx with the change-up. Nov 10 you sign $15.2 million deal. More stress for you, alas, but $2.2 million more for ALS, $2.2 million less for John Henry’s NASCAR operation.

    B) Nuance: Evidently Theo still can’t get the leaks to stop. He’s a good man. Must be so frustrating for him to compare the Pats airtight operation to leaky Yawkey Way.

I’m glad to think of you as a fellow New Englander, heh. Welcome to the neighborhood!

  31. jkey Says:

OK, my fondest daydream for the end of the season is you, healthy and happy and holding your second World Series MVP trophy, while Theo reaches for his wallet…

That aside, I do have a few questions.

    1. Does it irritate you at all that the FO keeps making chirpily confident statements about how if they want you at the end of the year, they’re sure they can get you?

    2. Does their “no renewal” stance make you feel like they are, in effect, betting against you having a big year? Does that bother you?

    3. Why, at this point in your career, when you had been planning not to make any money from baseball in 2008, is the size of your contract still important enough to you that you would leave a team and community you enjoy to play elsewhere?

  32. mrbill66 Says:

    Curt..

This is the 1st time I have ever posted on someone’s blog page. I’m glad it is yours. We are roughly the same age as I turn 41 next week. I have been a Sox fan all of my life. I have seen and felt a ton of heart ache as has anyone who bleeds Red Sox red. Regardless of what happens with your pitching here in 2008, I want to personally thank you for the choice you made coming to Boston, with out you, there would be no championship period. I sincerley hope that you and the FO can work something out that will allow you to fully come full circle and finish your career here. If not, I fully understand and wish you the best. Until then let’s win another championship in 2007, I can’t think of a better way for you to leave. Go Red Sox !!!!

  33. strike00 Says:

    Curt:

No Red Sox fan will every forget the 04 season and your amazing contribution. However, though chronologically you are still a young man, in baseball terms, you’re in the twilight of your career, with the sun fading fast. Why should the Sox pay you 13 million dollars for the 08 season? Baseball is incredibly out of sync with the rest of the world. The real world philosophy is don’t bore me with what you have done, but tell me what you are going to do and do it. It is not your fault baseball is so out of touch with reality, but the average fan doesn’t really connect with the player’s salaries and demands.

I have no real love for the Red Sox management but I can’t argue with their decision to let this decision float. As an owner of a company, I would do the same thing. If they don’t sign you to a 13 million dollar contract, there will be better pitchers on the market to invest in. Remember what the Bible has to say about pride. Try staying humble through the process. Why don’t you keep your options open and let the fans know that you will give the Red Sox, as well as any other team, ample opportunity to sign you. After that, drop the subject and move on to doing what you do best.

  34. thirtyeightreasons Says:

    Hey Curt,

I’d like to think that most of us in Sox Nation realize that the media was trying to blow this one out of proportion. We know that both yourself and Theo are the consummate professionals when it comes to the “business” side of baseball, and naturally I commend you for it as well. Sure, I’ve no idea what it’s like to be a player and to deal with contracts, etc., but either way, a resounding THANK YOU for just being you, and being here now. I sure as hell hope you’re here next year, and as long as you feel you can play. You’re a hero, brother! To all Boston fans, and no matter what, you always will be. like Foulk, too. Despite the way he left the team, and the BS he was given, the class of ‘04 will always get that free pass. We love you, man. And wish you the best for the coming year, and every other endeavor you’re a part of.

And something I’ve always wondered - as a veteran, do you share all, some or none of your experience with the younger guys?? And is something like that volunteered or do you just work with those who approach you.

  35. jduges Says:

    Curt-

While I respect your position on why you wouldn’t play for the yankees I think you are slightly mistaken on your view that the “majority of yankee fans” wouldn’t want you.

That may be the case as of 3/15/07 but I can guarantee you that come the end of the season all yankee fans care about is winning (this is where we are not as fickle as boston fan)……if we are in need of a SP and you are the best option available, watch the yankee fans salivate at the prospects of adding you to a rotation that will include wang, pettitte, hughes, mussina…….

We could list a litany of players that we’re “hated” by yankee fan and then later embraced once that player was in pinstripes……Johnny Damon, mike Myers, Menkievich, not to mention Tino Martinez, Mussina, clemens, etc…etc…

but once you are loved your remembered forever…………..As a huge yankee fan I for one can say I’d love to have you on our team next year……

Don’t forget-if there’s one thing yankee fan loves more than winning, it’s sticking it to Boston and what better way than to take one of their legends bring him to new york and win the world series……maybe it would start another 86 year curse and wouldn’t that be sweet?

    Again, thank’s for the insight…..

  36. lyorkell Says:

    Curt,

Thanks again for the truth behind your contract situation and the media in Boston. I don’t believe that anyone could or should believe anyone in the Boston media except for Peter Gammons. I know that we’ve been jerked around for years and some have made some players get a bad reputation because these scribes don’t like them for whatever reason. They also have a soapbox to rip people and things with no recourse. It’s not very fair. Speaking of that, do you think that there’s a spy in Red Sox organization? Perhaps someone like Mr./Dr. Steinberg? I know from reading “Feeding the Monster” that he got some bad press in there. Do you think that someone from the organization was going to leak it out?

What’s the launch date for your game at 38 Studios? Thanks again CS!

You brought great joy to myself my family and all of New England…….you stand up and deliver in all siutations…….I have used your actions as a motivating factor for my Red Sox Little League team here in Brockton many times…….I thank you, and hope things work out. Your honesty is so refreshing, its scary! I hope you win 25 games this year! If you go, you will have a fan here no matter where you play.

  38. Tim Daloisio Says:

    Curt,

I certainly hope that 2008 works out in Boston. Its refreshing to hear however that if it doesn’t, its only because it didn’t make mutual sense. Sometimes the chips fall the way the fall and neither side is to blame and there was no ill intent on either party.

I would like to think that the Red Sox would offer you a fair contract and if they did, you would take it. We’ll wait until the season ends to play that out.

Although we disagree completely on politics, I love you anyway!

What can I say? You speak from the reality of the situation. Why not just stay in Boston for a little less, though? :-)

I understand other players or your union wouldn’t like it, but you’re not exactly a Workers of the World guy anyway.

Yeah, I’m tongue-in-cheek here, but all kidding aside I would hate to see you pitching in any other uniform and still cherish the day you signed with us back in ‘03. Made my holiday, that’s for sure, and I got serious about the Sox again on that date. Well, ever-more-obsessed, I suppose, is the best way to put it.

Hope it all works out, glad you love Medfield, and keep on being Curt Schilling, big guy.

  41. ego221 Says:

Mr. Schilling, Here’s what I don’t understand about ballplayers. You love Boston. You’ve obviously decided that Mass. is the state in which you’ve chosen to live. You’re the ace of a potentially great pitching staff. There are no better fans to play in front of than “Sox Nation!” Therefore, why is it necessary that you be paid $15 million dollars to stay in ‘08? Surely you don’t need the money, especially with a potentially bright future in your endevours post-retirement. That leaves “ego” as the reason why you wouldn’t be willing to stay for less. In other words, you’re as good if not better than “Joe Blow” who’s making $18 million so why should I not make at least what he makes? It’s this type of thinking that has driven salaries through the roof and has left me and my family unable to attend games because we can no longer afford it. Let me be clear - I am in no way accusing you of being one of these ballplayers, yet I think if you do leave and go elsewhere for $15 million or more, that’s exactly what it will look like. Don’t you agree? Why not set a presedent and make a statement by signing for less and staying with the team you obviously want to pitch for? Wake has done this, and Trotty has as well ( and look where that got him, but that’s another story). Maybe you can explain to myself and others why this is NOT a good way to go out. It would still be on your terms, and “Sox Nation” would see that you’re more than just a nice guy that enjoys communicating with your fans. You’d be a hero that truly meant what he said when he claimed that he wanted to finish his carreer in Boston. I hold much respect for you, sir, yet I’d love for you to go one step further and show “Nation” that you truly mean what you say. If you can address this issue in a future posting, I’d really appreciate it. There may be many issues that I’m unaware of, yet I’d be more than open-minded in listening to the reasons why this is not feasible. We need you Curt, and I wish you’d make every effort to make “Curt Schilling Day” (upon retiremnt) in Boston, a reality! Number “38″ would look pretty cool up there on that right-field cross-beam, wouldn’t it? Take your place in Boston sports lore with the likes of Larry Bird, Yaz, Ted, Bobby Orr, and Bill Russell! You can make that happen!!! Thanks for taking the time to consider this suggestion. Eric Davenport - Meriden, CT

  42. RedSoxStatsGuy Says:

    Curt,

Do comparable salaries come up in salary negotiations? For instance, would you compare yourself to Gil Meche to make the point that you deserve significantly more than $13 million?

What do you use for stats in negotiations? What do they use?

  43. locklandworth Says:

Curt, man, come on, just get the kids the puppies.

  44. quintjs Says:

I think the best point you made Curt is about that money being ‘free’. We all know the Red Sox spent up large this off season (Matsuzaka, Drew, Lugo) and part of the reason is they knew (or thought they did) that your contract was coming off the books.

I also like your stand on not negotiating during the season, it can cause a distraction to the player, Josh Beckett admitted that much when he got his extension last season.

Its just a bit about business, anyone can see its not personal. Sadly, Curt is coming of the second half of last season which wasn’t how anyone would have wanted it to do, especially yourself.

The Sox are taking the safe approach and see what happens, Curt, if you pitch like you are capable of all season, we all know they will give that contract you want and then some.

All i can say is go out of get them, big year.

Thanks for the clarification on the contract situation. It is difficult sometimes for us fans to fully understand the machinations involved in contract negotiations. As far as we are concerned it’s a black or white situation. Reality suggests otherwise.

I do hope things work out in such a way that you can stay with the Red Sox but if not, hey, que sera, sera.

Curt………..I’ve been a Red Sox fan for 60 of the 65 years that I’ve been on this good earth. Needless to say, I’ve lived and died with their failures and successes. Winning the world series in ‘04 was a great feeling and gave long time BoSox fans like myself much needed reason to celebrate. Having said that, I applaud you for your contributions since becoming a key member of the Red Sox. I would love to think that you would be a member of the Sox in ‘08. But I believe that many Red Sox Nation members understand that despite baseball being a kids game, it’s also a business. Whatever you decide will be understood by real Sox fans. You have to do what you feel is best for you and your family. I wish you well this year and if you decide to leave after this season, then I hope you go out a winner and help Boston win its second World Series title. Thank you and God bless!

Since, it appears that nothing is going to happen until November I will repeat what I have said on various blogs, boards and my own blog (plls.blogspot.com):

You win 18 - 20 games with a sub 3.5 ERA and file for FA, in which you get a RJ or Schmidt type of offer for 2 years and the Sox say, Sayanora. Would kill me, but I would be more PO’ed at the Sox than I would be at you.

I thought ego221 made some good points about money and when is enough money enough. Wouldnt a contract with large incentives meet many of the conditions raised. Therefore if you have a season where you cant get your grandmother out you havent cost the ball club a huge amount of money however if you have a brilliant season (as you will) the club would gladly pay the extra dollars and also the penalties for breaking the salary cap.

    Kind Regards

Very well put. It’s nice to see that you take the time out of your busy day to explain in detail how much the Media is garbage. I do have a few questions if you could answer if time permits.

    1) I do see the yanks would be out of the question but who would be your top team choices to play for in 08(the Red Sox are the obvious choice)?

    2) If you could have a ‘Super’ Team who would be in your lineup?

    3) Honestly speaking when is Jacoby Ellsbury moving up in your eyes? I really enjoyed watching him play at OSU and not knocking Coco but he hasn’t produced like I really thought he would of.

Thanks again for taking the time. GO SOX!!! Some day I will see a game at Fenway.

Not enough game studios in the area. Can we expect to see a fire breathing red sox green monster destroying a pin stiped character in the game.

Curt, I noticed that you think the DirectTV deal signed last week “sucks”. A number of us baseball fans are forming a coalition as well as a petition to send to the FCC asking them to investigate the deal as like you said, it will be leaving millions of very loyal fans in the dark and unable to watch baseball. While you reside in Medfield, and your family has the ability to have NESN, I am sure many players families, just like many of the fans, rely on having the ability to purchase the Extra Innings package on cable. I would be honored if you would be willing to sign your name to our coalition and join us in preventing America’s pastime from becoming America’s past.

Curt - Well Said! What you said in your post is exactly what I said to Seth Mnookin back when the story first broke on WEEI. I knew your position before you stated it here. Even though we don’t know each other - your character speaks loud and clear.

As for all of the suggestions as to where you spend your salary, nice as they may be and for good causes - it’s really rude and inconsiderate to be telling other people what to do with their money. Based on your past contributions to the game and charities - I have no doubt that awarding Curt Schilling with more money has a positive impact on many more individuals without the last name of Schilling - that’s what makes you and your family so great.

Love the blog. Keep it up.

  63. maireq Says:

I am now a professional at hating the media.

Starting in Arizona, with your ‘roof open, roof closed controversy’, and then your ‘returning to Philly to pitch’ controversy - in Philly - where some clown apparently bashed you on the radio in earshot of your son. Always spin, always unattributed nasty comments by ’some player’ in the locker room. So easy to assassinate someone’s character without anything to back it up. So easy when they’re the ones doing all the talking.

And of course, the 2001 WS was classic. As a DBack fan, we listened to endless East Coast media (out of New York) broadcasts making fun of everything - from the pool at BOB, to the colors of the uniforms, and oh how they made fun of us fans. I loved it when I heard that the bulk of the media was trapped downstairs, waiting by the Yankee locker room when Gonzo hit his famous bloop in the bottom of the 9th, Game 7. They missed one of the great moments in baseball history. Occasionally there is poetic justice. Revenge, even.

Every time I think I can’t possibly hate the media any more… they crank it up a notch.

This year (for me,) it was the relentless abuse of our Chicago Bears QB, Rex Grossman. Rex grew up in my home town of Bloomington, Indiana, went to my high school… and this was his first full, uninjured season with the Bears. He actually had the opportunity to really play and finally make all of those rookie mistakes you get to make in your first full season in the NFL, as you adjust to changing defenses and the faster pace of the game (I learned all of this in a Manning interview during his rookie year.)

Rex showed flashes of brilliance, and he has already given Chicago more QB success than most of us have seen in a lifetime. Manning’s first year he threw more interceptions than touchdowns - but of course he was officially a rookie and on a losing team. Still, the media crucified him. They crucified Ryan Leaf so relentlessly that he cracked. And yes, Rex wasn’t officially a rookie anymore, and was playing on a (hard to believe) winning Chicago team, so the media ‘double-crucified him.’ Fortunately he’s a tough kid. Hopefully this will make him even stronger, but I’m still angry about it. He lives here in my home town, for heaven’s sake.

But hey - anything goes for a story, right? Truth, lies… does it matter, if it sells?

I can’t tell you how much I *really* hate the media out here on your blog, or you’ll have to ban my post.

I know you are used to this treatment, and you will ignore them. Its great that you have an outlet like this so you can tell your side of the story, every time they spin and make up their own, sensationalized reality. Show them for the ‘truth-inventing’ low-lives that they really are. Rake them over the coals. It will make great reading. :)

    Curt,

I have been a fan of yours since your beginning days as a Phillie. I have always watched your career with great interest and have completely enjoyed every season of it. I cannot thank you enough for the years of enjoyment that you have provided both myself and my family. My Father is suffering from brain cancer, and though his memory has been affected grately, the one thing, or one person that he can clearly remember and discuss is you. I enjoy the lively debates that we have, especially the ones that involve you, since we tend to agree on all points.

Anyhoo, as a fellow Christian who sometimes struggles with his Christianity, I find it refreshing to hear such a public figure like yourself, who not only celebrates his Christianity, but doesn’t for one second stand on his soapbox and preach to the world how he is perfect and says his views and ways are the only way to live. You are far from it. From reading your blog, you have appeared to be one of the single mose genuine and honest down-to-earth “famous people” that has ever come down the pike. It is honestly refreshing to read your blog as it feels to me that you have made yourself so very available to all of your fans. You have opened yourself up for all to know and that is truly a great thing for you to do. Thank you for that.

I do have to admit that I have always pined for you to come back to Philadelphia to pitch your last pitch. While I have to admit that I still would love for you to do that, I have to aplaud you for your honesty in publicly stating how your family comes first. That is the way it should be, but it sure is nice to not only have a public figure come out and say it, but also mean it.

Curt, I still pray that you do throw your last pitch in red pinstripes. More than anything else, I do hope that you, and your family are safe, happy, and healthy, and at peace with whatever decision that you make together for whatever team that you do end up pitching for in 2008.

God Bless you and your family Curt. Take care!

  69. blisterfoot99 Says:

Man, I cannot believe the ego on this guy! You’re delusional if you think the Yankees would pay you $20 million! Are you completely out of your mind?

If you’re sincere that you really want to stay in Boston, you should be happy to re-sign with the Sox now at a discount, instead of holding out for the “better all around offer.” After all, since you’re so sure your company will be a “multi-billion dollar behemoth” (give me a break), your 2008 salary is irrelevant, right?

Sorry, $#$$, but it’s pretty clear that this is just more b.s. from the most disingenuous (or “disingenious,” as you like to say–LMAO!) guy in baseball. Probably just trying to save face after Theo (correctly) laughed at your ridiculous demand for an extension.

You’re ridiculous, dude. I wish we could get rid of you to make some room in the rotation for someone who isn’t a blowhard.

  70. tpetey Says:

    Curt,

Thanks for the dispassionate review of events. It’s always good to replace unfounded speculation with actual facts. I think I understand your position and the position of the FO a little better now. It’s true that baseball is a business, and that you and the Red Sox have different fiduciary responsibilities. You’re responsible to yourself, your family, and your joint future, and they have to put the long-term interests of the ballclub ahead of any other concern. I’m glad there were no hard feelings resulting from your failure to come to an agreement.

    A couple of quick questions:

In your negotiations, did Theo & Co. ever propose a smaller guaranteed salary accompanied by a set of reachable incentives (something like Boomer’s last two deals)? Given their legitimate concerns about your age, it seems to me that’s one way for them to mitigate their substantial risk. If they did, did you give it due consideration, or were you firm in your desire for a simple guaranteed extension at your current salary? Were you willing to make any concessions to assuage their concerns?

I know you’ve correctly set a deadline of the end of camp for a new deal to be put in place, but the impression I get is that negotiations have effectively ended. Is there any chance you’ll get together with them sometime within the next two weeks to overturn the last stones and see if there’s a way both sides can be satisfied?

I’d really love for you to end your career in Boston, and for you to enter the Hall wearing a Sox cap. But whatever happens, I want you to know we will never forget that you put it on the line for us when it counted. Thank you for that.

  71. tpetey Says:

    Curt,

Sorry about the back-to-back posts, but there’s another question I neglected to ask:

When you decided to extend your career by another year (or more), were you partly motivated by the need for capital for your startup venture? I’ve read that 38Studios is still actively seeking capital (talking with potential investors, etc.). It certainly takes an awful lot of money to create a company like 38Studios from scratch, and I was just wondering if the chance to self-fund a larger part of the startup and initial operating costs and seek fewer investment dollars was in the back of your mind when you decided to continue playing (and earning).

  72. beisbolct Says:

If the Red Sox asked you to play for the league minimum next year, would you sign with them.

With that question being asked, I would love for the Red Sox to sign you again for next season. You have meant a lot to the Red Sox Nation and your willingness to share your thoughts about anything and everything is truly a blessing to us fans.

Good luck in your personal and pitching endeavors and nothing but the best of luck and health to you and your family.

Please consider Philly, you could really mentor Brett Myers, Cole Hamels, and all the young guys in the clubhouse, show them what it means to be a great pitcher and a great man.

The Daily News had some great pictures of lots of former Phillies paying their repsects to Vuk. As a Phils fan it was great to see all the Phils there to celebrate the life of one of the greatest. On that note, I realize that you were in town for the funeral of a dear friend and it was only for a short while, but I was wondering: were you able to catch up with anyone that maybe you hadn’t seen or heard from in a while?

  74. bobeltrash Says:

    Curt,

I just discovered your blog, and I want to let you know that I’m really enjoying it. I particulary enjoy how detailed and specific your comments are regarding pitching. As a baseball fan, nothing entertains me more than hearing what pitchers have to say about pitching, other pitchers, and hitters. And for the record, when you start talking about things other than baseball, I’m fascinated, regardless of whether or not I agree with everything you have to say, I like it that you say what you think.

I’ve got a few questions for you as well:

    1. Where do you think The Rocket will pitch in 2007 (if at all)? And how much would it mean to you if he came to Boston?

    2. From my perspective, I think this year’s rotation looks like it is going to be the best one in the majors. Do you agree? I have no doubt that Daisuke will adapt quickly and that J.P. will make the transition successfully. I expect Beckett to have a more consistent year than last year (less long balls), and I never doubt that you are going to have a solid season, even if you are 40. I’m not too sure who the 5th starter will be, Wakefield? Lester? Either way, I’d be surprised if the top 4 starters didn’t combine for 60 wins.

    3. How do you think Varitek will fare this year, coming off some nagging injuries and an off year for him offensively?

Thanks for writing the blog, it is sweet, and thanks for taking the time to answer some questions.

  75. cd1515 Says:

    Curt-

    great stuff once again.

do players, when negotiating contracts, ever consider other players?

for example, you’re asking a team for X amount of money, and the team says ‘OK, we’ll give you that but we’ll have to get rid of 3 other guys to afford it.’

would that enter into it at all?

or is it simply every man for himself?

  76. sbasil Says:

    Curt,

As I am on my umpteenth business excursion this year which no one here cares about, it has prompted me to ask, when making the decision to come back in 2008, how does the fact that you’ll be away from your family for another 135 days (counting spring training and the playoffs) in 2008 factor into that decision. Is your family conditioned to this fact as being “par for the course” or normal because it’s the way it’s always been? How do you reconcile the fact you’re going to miss out another year of family and friends’ weddings, baptisms, birthdays, etc.

I know some may simply look at this and say he’s making millions living a dream career but you’re also a person with a young family. I was wondering if you could explain your perspective when deciding to come back and focus on baseball in 2008.

    S Basil

PS I watched you playing catch with your son in the outfield pregame last year along with 3 generations of my family and I can tell you it was vewry touching. Of course my father commented that he threw the ball better to me when I was a kid than you did to your son. j/k.

JUST THINK CURT, YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE IN THE REAL WORLD. HOW DOES THAT FEEL?

    QUESTION:

Love the Blog, wish more athletes and people in the public would use this medium.

Anyway, I have a question for ya. ARod may be a FA this coming year, would any Sox interest in him sway you one way or another in re-signing with the Sox? He doesn’t seem like a Curt Schilling type of player, I could be way off base, but I’ve thought I’ve heard you be critical of ARod in the past.

  82. xcmatt79 Says:

    Hey Curt!

Well said, my man. I would love to have you back in Boston for the 2008 season. Most all redsox fans with an IQ over 38 certainly share this feeling. You mean more the fans of Boston and the fans of you than you know.

Thanks for bein’ there for us.

    -Matt

  83. aimcifer Says:

All I know is I hope you and the Red Sox can come to an agreement for ‘08.

  84. mikedlif Says:

curt, thank you for posting this. its good when we can read about somthing andhave it come straight from the source insted of each local sports writer putting their spin or adding their two cents into the story. i look forward to reading this blog all season long. i just hope you go on to have a amazing 2007 season and have you back with the red sox in 2008

  85. bdlefan99 Says:

Oh, Curt ,, In case I forget I just wanted to say THANK YOU for ‘04.. I have never seen a more flagrant display of courage and guts on a sports field as you performed , i.e. THE BLOODY SOCK. Of course Red Sox management never said boo to you in 2005 because you were still recouperating from an injury that you risked your career over to win the World Series by beating the Yankees. I almost laugh when i see posts that say IF you get in the Hall Of Fame.. Let me tell you ,, You are a first ballet inductee. The Hall of Fame is made for men like you that suck it up and go out and prove it on the field and you don’t complain about your profession that most of us would kill just to spend one day doing .

If the media pisses you off, just ignore them, Boston and New England fans will always love and respect you for all that you did for Red Sox Nation.

  86. jpow22 Says:

    Thanks for the Post Curt!

We love ya around here and appreciate all you’ve done for the Red Sox, the fans and the community.

I hope you stay around here but I understand the buisness part………..Anyway Good Luck and stay healthy!

Sports figures communicating directly to the fans, what a great thing we have today.

The Old media is dying. That’s y these guys like to “create” controversy. They have to do something to create a reason to care about em.

    Good luck Curt

  87. oldskool138 Says:

    Curt,

I wasn’t a big fan of your signing back in 2003. I thought the money was too much for a guy your age. Then the Ford “Break the 86 year old Curse” commercial came out (the “wicked haaad” Dunkin’ ad was funny). I’m a skeptical New Engalnder and a long suffering Red Sox fan (plus after the Grady Little debacle, could you really blame me?).

You shut my mouth permanently during the ‘04 season and with your legendary heroics in the ALCS and WS. I drive through Medfield every day on my way to work and saw all the Schilling signs. That was something I’ll never forget.

I was also one of the crazy, screaming fans when you made your first appearance as a closer against the Yanks. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a game that loud. And, even though you didn’t succeed, it took some brass cajones to do what you did. I’ve been a huge fan of yours ever since.

Your candor is refreshing. A lot of sports stars around here give stock answers to questions. You put a lot of thought behind your answers.

Okay, I’m done showering praise on you. Go out and kick some butt!

  88. chitoryu Says:

    Curt:

My puppy recommendations: either minature long haired daucshunds or regular Bassetts. Both are the cutest puppies on the planet.

The mini D’s are low impact, always cute, very kid friendly, easy to care for and transport. They love to entertain each other.

The Bassetts will get bigger but are fiercely loyal, again, always cute, with that hush puppy look and do well together. Higher impact on the house, though and as stubborn as a Red Sox fan’s hope each Spring.

Both breeds are the tops in distinction and having personality.

I named my Bassett puppy Petey, after Pedro.

And, again, thanks for the blog. As my friends from Chicago say, “It don’t get no better than this!”

    Mike C.

((disclaimer: I really like Chicago and the people there. And, they do say it that way.))

  89. aeturnus77 Says:

Curt! helluva pitcher, hopefully we’ll see you back with the Sox in 2008. It’s great being able to read your thoughts without having the media twist them.

Looking forward to 38Studios games.. I am ecstatic that R.A. Salvatore is on board. That man’s work is genius and been a fan of his since ‘88

Best of luck this year with everything, 38! Gotta make this short since I’m at work…

    Go Sox!

    Brian

  90. techsoldaten Says:

Your analysis of the situation is correct and makes sense. It would be disappointing to see you leave, but people would understand if you move on.

But the ankle stays. It’s a part of Red Sox history and has a significance greater than any one man. You even think about putting another team’s sock on that thing and the love affair is over.

  91. themurth Says:

Curt, Great Job! I know you have to be careful about what you say in regards to the media, but I don’t. As a true fan, I am sick and tired of the b.s. that the media dishes out. The internet is a wonderful thing! Because of it, we can circumvent the media and get the “true” thoughts of our athletic heros. Keep the blogs coming!

  92. blueatoll Says:

    Curt:

Your frankness, intelligence, and candor make this the BEST blog for the inner-workings of baseball around. I only hope the Red Sox organization doesn’t ask you to cut out the comments about pitches thrown.

Are you still doing research, etc. with Multiman Publishing? Still playing Squad Leader?

  93. jimmykc Says:

Curt: Thanks for respecting us enough to clear this up even though I’m sure the media will continue to try to make the situation more complicated than it has to be. Let’s turn the page now and concentrate on what is really important, i.e. this season. While I realize that planning for the future is necessary to achieve goals, I am even more aware that we often have no control of our future. On Pearl Harbor day (Dec 7) I went from being a healthy 63 year old professional with a successful life stretching before me, to a 63 year old patient with metastatic cancer of the tonsil. My perspective on the future changed in the space of one hour. So far I am doing ok, but believe me , this season is the only one I have an interest in now. It sounds like you have your own priorities properly set already with your family being the most important part of your decision making process. Have a great 2007, and thanks again for the unforgettable 2004.

  94. emo2964 Says:

Curt: Thanks for the whole story. I am still disappointed and wish that the Red Sox had signed you, but I am glad that it was a respectful and, to their minds, well thought out decision. I stand fast in my belief that they are making a big mistake and hope that they see the light and do not let you get away. You are a fierce competitor and I love your attitude that you will be one game better than everyone else. If you pitch elsewhere, I will route for you unless you are pitching against us.

I have, guess what, 2 questions.

What do you think of Gabe Kapler’s venture into managing? Aside from you, Gabe is my favorite Red Sox member. He speaks so eloquently on many subjects and always has something interesitng and insightful to say. I think that his innate understanding of the “right” way to play and his ability to understand the psyche of young players will serve him well as a manager. I wish for his success and hope that one day he manages the Sox. Any thoughts??

Also, do your children like to watch games more when you pitch or when you don’t pitch?? What do they experience as your children during a game when you pitch ? Are they nervous, excited? It must be so cool to be one of them. Good luck and keep it coming… both the great pitching performances and the blog.

Curt, There’s nothing like kids with puppies…I raise German Shepherds and my son grew up with puppies everywhere, he and the neighborhood kids had a blast Go ahead, give your children another gift of love!

  96. oldpeoplesox Says:

Curt, being a Sox fan, I worry that you’ll be blogging more than preparing yourself for the season. The time you have used putting all these articles together, could have been better used in conditioning yourself, being paid as much as you do unless you are writing from a treadmill. I just hope this doesnt affect your performance on the field because the Red Sox are very important to me.

  97. fivekatz Says:

Nice post. Putting the media spin aside, the root here always seemed to be that the RS probably projected your salary slot in 2008 and beyond into their off season moves this year.

JUst the same when you read that the RS have given serious consideration to bringing Roger Clemens here for a partial season at similar $$$ last year and possibly this year, it is as a fan mildly disappointing that this RS didn’t “find” the extra $13M. It is their money and while the numbers are so big and it becomes like monopoly money, it is a tremendous amount of operating capital. Even at the market relative modest and moderate figure you had proposed it is still a lot of revenue. So it is hard to sit here and judge.

Just the same, if a player earned a 1 year leap of faith in a short time with a baseball team, you were that guy.

I like to think that when push comes to shove the RS are committed to finding the money and willing to pay a premium once they feel comfortable that you still have a performance runway. And whilst you can never say it and that next contract wouldn’t be for Ted Lilly money, my impression of you as a person is that they won’t have to be the highest bidder. Many fans may not get it but I think I understand that what your employer is willing to pay you is a powerful statement to any person of how much that employer values you.

Regardless of the RS final approach and/or how the media spins things to work fans into a frenzy, they will always be the “angry man” minority of RS Nation. For the majority of RS Nation, you sir are valued.

  98. pga1978 Says:

Curt thanks for 2004, if you resign with the Sox great, if you don’t then hey don’t let the door hit your a55 on the way out. If you wanted the Sox to sign you then why not show up at camp remotely in shape? If you look like you do now then what will you look like at next years spring training? You could pull it off when you were younger, but those times are past by.

  99. hammerhead Says:

Curt, I’ve never left a comment before. Let me say this. I work as a TV cameraman and I primarily cover sporting events. Yes, I have covered games you’ve played in. So, to say the least, I am not enamored by “celebrities”. They are people just like anybody else. Nor do I “blow smoke” in speaking to people. As a matter of fact, I’m a lot like you….I treat everyone fairly, equally and straight-to-the-point. And I know for a fact most people don’t like that. You’re supposed to play the game….or more precisely, “their” game.

I very much appreciate your honesty and upfront style. I’m sure you piss alot of writers off because you don’t pull any punches or give anyone preferential treatment. How dare you!!! Now they have to create controversy where none actually exists. I wish more people were like you.

Since this is my first post to you I’ll be brief. I do hope you stay with the Red Sox. I greatly appreciate the fact you understand how being 40 changes how they are approaching you. I turn 42 in April. I now understand why most athletes are retired by my age. Your body starts to betray you. And it happens fast! I hope you have a great year in 07 AND 08. If by some chance you were to leave after this year, I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping bring that elusive World Series Championship here.

You did what very few people would have done to pitch in the 04 postseason. Bottom line…..Fact!!! You did it with perserverence and the utmost class. That should be something EVERY Red Sox fan should remember first and foremost when thinking of you. And on top of that, you make yorself available to fans through your blog. That’s unheard of!

Well, that’s enough for now. Now get your ass out there and get another trophy for Beantown!!!

Jeff. Ps….I just happened to catch post 69-blisterfoot….now that’s what I’m talkin’ about…that guy is absolutely clueless and an idiot on top of that. I guess it takes all kinds. Peace!

Anyone from that team (04) should beg to stay. YES they should pay you fair market price.

You will never have to pay for a meal in this town or buy a drink.

    We owe you forever.</
