Schilling uses Performance Enhancing Drug? February 11, 2008

Curt Schilling received a cortisone shot in his right shoulder on Friday, beginning a treatment plan the Red Sox hope will bring the right-hander back before the end of the season, The Boston Globe reported.The painkilling shot would allow Schilling to begin rehabbing an injured shoulder tendon. Boston’s team physician believes the tendon is damaged, not torn, and that rehabilitation gives Schilling his best chance to play this year.

This begs the question. If HGH is considered a “performance enhancing drug,” why isn’t cortisone? It is a drug. It allows for performance enhancing capabilities. Therefore, it must be.

“Well, cortisone is safe and HGH is not!” Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, it is 100% the opposite. Here is a partial list of side effects from cortisone:

    * an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives);

    * increased blood pressure (severe headache or blurred vision); or

    * sudden weight gain (more than 5 pounds in a day or two).

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take cortisone and talk to your doctor if you experience

    * insomnia;

    * nausea, vomiting, or stomach upset;

    * fatigue or dizziness;

    * muscle weakness or joint pain;

    * problems with diabetes control; or

    * increased hunger or thirst.

Other side effects that occur only rarely, usually with high doses of cortisone, include

    * acne,

    * increased hair growth,

    * thinning of the skin,

    * cataracts,

    * glaucoma,

    * osteoporosis,

    * roundness of the face, and

    * changes in behavior.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur.

Here is the list of side effects of HGH:

- carpal tunnel syndrome (not proven by any means)

- tenderness or pain at the site of injection (only when used subcutaneously).

Tell me which is the dangerous one?!

Hey Curt. The constitution grants you the right to remain silent. You need to use it. Your statements about Clemens make as much sense as a screen door on a submarine. I think that they ought to send your bloody sock to the crime lab to see whats in it. Dude. Get a grip.

Kurt,

First of all I applaud your innovative thinking in starting this blog. I agree with every word you had written and spoken about in regards to Roger Clemens.

In relation to having no control over who the organization brings in and moves out on a weekly/monthly basis. What is the overall thinking of a ballplayer as this time of year approaches (trade deadline)? I had read an article yesterday in the Chicago Tribune quoting Jim Thome, something to the effect that regardless of weather you are playing well or playing not so well you will probably see your name pop up in trade rumors. Is this a frame of mind that ball players get into around this time of year, or is this just an overall thinking in your profession that you could be hear today, gone tomorrow.

Best of luck and get that shoulder healed were gonna need ya in the second half of this season.

Hi Curt,

My name is Michael and I'm a 42 year old personal trainer on the South Shore. I'm a huge Curt Schilling fan and marvel at the accomplishments that guys like yourself, Roger Clemens, Tim Wakefield, Randy Johnson are still performing at 40+. Its a testament to your hard work and dedication to the game you love!

I'm really going to put myself out on the line today, but nothing ventured, nothing gained!

At 42 I realize that 40 is definitely the new 30, lolol We 40+ guys still have plenty of gas left in the tank. You keep playing until your physically unable to do so. I LOVE WATCHING!

I'm sure the Red Sox have a trainer for everything. Maybe I'm sadly mistaken? I'd like to offer you my personal services as your trainer. I'm extremely sincere in my proposal. Lately the luck of the draw just hasn't been going your way aside from the gem you pitched barely missing out on a no-hitter. Poetry in motion Curt!

I'm a firm believer that we can all get better regardless of our age. Theres no match for years of experience, etc. . . I believe you have much more in the tank. I'd like to teach you how to harness it. Really dig deep within yourself until it hurts. I'll take off the extra weight. I'll make you better, stronger and faster! The choice is yours.

If your interested please feel free to contact me. I respect your privacy and I'm not out to cash in on your celebrity. You'll be treated just like any other client I train. References can also be provided. I truly hope I hear back from you. I know I can help you meet all your personal goals. You'll be pitching for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Michael

Curt,

With all due respect, I think that Roger Clemens has become the Barbara Streisand of Major League Baseball. What is this? His 3rd "farewell tour"? Listen, I agree with you that he is one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball history. And I know that you are a true fan who knows the history of the game. But Clemens has a history of being disingenuous. This is the same guy who after the '96 season said he wanted to pitch closer to his family in Texas. Where does he go? Toronto. Now, I'm no geography expert, but the last time I checked Toronto wasn't very close to Texas. Earlier this year he said that money wouldn't be a factor in where he went. Look, I am a capitalist and I applaud anyone in this world who wants to make money. And there's nothing wrong with Clemens being one of millions of people who do. But for goodness sake just be honest and don't give me any of this B.S. about how "it's not about the money."

Before I go, I just want to say on a personal note that I'm a Cubs fan, but I rooted for the Red Sox in the 2004 World Series. And I don't care what anyone says, your performance in Game 6 of the ALCS is one of the best pitching performances I've ever seen. Not only was that courageous, but you're courageous for sticking up for the troops. God bless you, man.

Curt...us Sox fans know its not Boston's fault that Clemens isn't coming.

Tell you the truth...I don't want him there because after this season i bet he is retiring. So we don't need him, we have quality pitchers besides Tavariz.

Ya'll need to do something with him. Take him out bring in Jon Lester.

Screw Clemens. I agree with you Curt. Yes, he's the best pitcher of my time for sure. But I like the blend of youth and experience we have with you and Wake anchoring young bucks like Dice, Beckett, and hopefully Lester. 20 someodd mil. for maybe 10-12 wins? Damn! Lucky man. But let the Yanks pay for that crap, and hopefully it blows up in their face like the rest of their recent pitching acquisitions. Keep up the great work curt and the rest of the crew. SOX ROCK!

I am concerned that Clemens is setting a dangerous precedent for baseball. I don't like the idea of a professional athlete retiring every year then selling his services to the highest bidder the next season.

I can see Major League Baseball trying to set up criteria for this -- like maybe making the recent retiree stay out of competitive baseball for a year before coming back in. Or perhaps the offended team he retired from should receive suitable compensation from the new team he signs with.

I have always been a Clemens fan but I don't like what he's doing.
