It’s looking good.
Nov 5th, 2007 by Curt Schilling
Talks with the Red Sox are moving. Theo and I have spoken multiple times daily over the past week and given the current situation I am feeling very confident that we will be able to finalize a 1 year contract to allow us a chance to finish our career as members of the Red Sox organization.
There are some things to iron out and details that must be finalized for both sides but barring something unforseen or outrageously odd happening I feel very comfortable that I will finish my career here.
CURT, just watching monday night football and saw the headlines of you working out a deal!!!!!! this will be a great day for the nation (red sox nation) if and when you sign back here, i think everyone is excited for you….
billy
Just happened to be looking on here, and this is great news!!! Looks like the Red Sox are serious about repeating, and I only wish we had you earlier!! I know certain parts of the lineup will be possibly different, but I’m glad we’re not overlooking pitching with all the hooplah on a-rod, etc….pitching and defense is what got us here! We love you in Maine Curt, and I hope things get finalized!! Congrats on the Championship!!
Josh from Banor
As a Phillies fan I am sorry to hear this news, but good luck.
Just read about it on ESPN. I’m not the biggest Schilling fan in the world, but I am one of the biggest Red Sox fans. I really think you should end your career in Boston. You deserve everything you get. I really really appreciate every memory you’ve given me. Thanks for ending your career here, hopefully. Next step, after another championship…the Hall. Congrats.
And it’s the best thing for the Sox. Make sure you help out the young guys next year. I’m sure they can learn a lot from a pitcher and a man like you.
Wicked glad to hear this, Curt. I am a big believer in karma and baseball superstition, and I think the Baseball Gods would have been angry if they let you go. ANd Hell, it would make no sense. You had a decent era again this year, and are still the big game pitcher.
As far as I am concerned, you are responsible for ending the 86 year agony, (and the agony I started to feel when I started to follow the Sox with my Dad when I was a kid in the early 60’s) I only wish he had lived long enough to see the Sox win it all. Btu alas, he passed away in ‘83. But I know he would have loved you!
Looking forward to hear that the deal is finalized and to see you at Fenway next year.
Curt:
I hope thats the wy it works out. I have my fingers crossed for you and for the RSN!
So glad to hear that news Curt. I am hoping by tomorrow morning it will be reported as a done deal. I heard about it first on the 11pm news just now. I came to your blog to see if it was true. We love you Curt Schilling and you deserve one more year in a Red Sox uniform.
Curt!!!
Nothing could make me happier.
You have been the best thing to happen to this team and ever since your Dunkin Donuts commercial have endeared yourself to RSN.
Thanks for one more year. Hold onto that notebook, I hope to see you as pitching coach next year, and also hope Farrell gets a sweet management job.
This is great news. Tell Theo to make sure he gets Mikey Lowell under contract as well. Congrats Curt and best of luck with everything.
Curt,
YAY!!! HOORAY!!!! RSN can take a load off!!!! I am soo happy that negotiations are going well!!! With you on our team the Sox have magic….2 World Championships with you pitching!!! You are awesome!! A tue warrior!!!
All the best to you and your family!!!
God Bless!!!
I’m really hoping this works out Curt. You always looked best in a Boston uniform.
Very nice. Things are moving towards the way they should be. The way it must be. We have a right to be able to say a proper goodbye and you have earned the right to hear our thanks, 38000 strong.
As a RARE fan of the Red Sox from Little Rock, Arkansas I’d love to see you finish your career in Boston. Despite an already plethora of memorable sports figures from the city of Boston, I believe you’ll still have a massive impact on that city and wherever you decide to go in the future.
I listened to ESPN’s Mike and Mike in the Morning and they ventured a guess as to your future after baseball might include politics, and if that were true, you’d have my vote!!
SWEET!!!
Bring home a Championship in 2008 for all of us!
- Maine
Curt,
so glad to hear your working out a deal to stay here, thank you for all the memories, and i look forward to more to come next season.
curt…
ironically, i just finished watching the sox 2004 championship DVD tonight - watched the interview with you talking about your start in game 2 of the series being one of the most incredible days of your life - and just sat there thinking “man, i so wish he was returning for just one more year!” - then i see the news on the internet tonight - i could not be more happy! i NEVER post comments on blogs, but i had to tonight to let you know, you are truly one of the best ever! go schill!
Curt, sign already dammit, and let Theo focus in on Mike Lowell.. haha
Curt -
Great news. I hope we can all celebrate soon.
Just saw Lobel mention this on the 11 pm news, but he said you weren’t commenting. I didn’t expect to see anything here, but man…
This is totally AWESOME!!! The best news this Sox fan could hear! I’m so glad you’ll be finishing your career in a Red Sox uniform, but far more psyched that you’ll be pitching us to another World Championship next year!!!
You’re the man, Curt. It only right for you to finish what you started right here!!!
It is great news because for once someone that said they wanted to stay and play somewhere actually did what was possible to make that happen.
I should have known that the Boston Herald stole their information off this blog.lol
That’s great to hear. I’m keeping tabs on you and Mike Lowell. With you saying this, there’s no question you’ll be back. It’s going to be great having you back for another season for all the things you’ve done for the team, the city, and us fans. Looking forward to hearing more news of your hopeful return and watching you on television in Florida in Spring. Red Sox Nation Thanks You!
Outstanding news, Curt! I’ve got all my fingers AND toes crossed that things are finalized soon.
YESSSSSSSSSSS!
Christmas has come early! 2007 World Series Champs and Curt back!
I wish you and your family many happy years in the Boston area.
Go for 3 in 5 in 2008.
YES! Curt, I had the pleasure of catching game 3 of the Anaheim series and game 2 of the World Series in person and I have to tell you that both times I was really sad to think that either one might have been your last game in a Sox uniform. When you came out of the game in game 2 I really got the feeling that it was your last game and it was definitely bittersweet for me in the 6th when you walked off the mound. Can’t tell you how happy I am (and RSN is as a whole) that I may have been wrong. Either way thanks for everything Curt, we always expected to lose and you helped changed that, we always expect to lose our favorite players and you may help change that as well. The Nation would never be what it has become with out you… optimists.
Rich
SoCalSox
That is such great news, you deserve it just as a reward for what you have done for Red Sox Nation and the insight you can provide for our young pitchers. Just wait until your first game at Fenway, will probably register at least a 7.2. Thanks Curt for everything you have done!!!
Hey Texasgal,
I love your blog. Great job.
Curt by far my favorite Player I cant wait to see you every 5 days or so on NESN this season!
Thanks for your effort on and off the field, you are a great American!
Go get em’ in 08!
-Matt
PS: Please consider running for President in 2012!
This news has made me incredibly happy! If not your pitching ability, you need to be on the team for all of the young pitchers who will be on the team next year. You take younger players under your wing, and it clearly makes them into better players. Plus a 3.87 ERA ain’t bad.
Thank you for wanting to stay with the Red Sox so badly — it means a lot to us.
Thank Theo for obliging. He’s made a lot of ‘unpopular’ business decisions, but they almost always turn out right. And even when they don’t…well… two WS in 4 years. ‘Nuff said.
Great News!!!
You have true class and your presence will be immeasurably valuable to the Red Sox, their fans and to New England.
Thanks for posting your progress (even though you said earlier you were not going to comment on negotiations) We will keep checking here…
hey man why do you put catsup on your socks?
Curt it’s great hear you are close to closing a deal and retiring with Boston. These last three years have been great and looking forward to a fourth. You have been such a positive person for the organization and New England. You will be remembered as the most dominant big time pitcher off all- time. God bless you with a healthy season, no matter where it is you end you playing.
Curt, I thanked you for 2004, and I now thank you for 2007. I’m glad it looks like you’ll be in a Sox uniform in ‘08. Hopefully you’ll be getting the ball from Mike Lowell after every bases-empty out.
damn it i would have loved it if you went to the mets then maybe we can finally win a championship in NY
ONE MORE YEAR!!!! ONE MORE YEAR!!!!!
One down, one to go! Now that you’re on board,
SIGN MIKE LOWELL!! SIGN MIKE LOWELL!!
I hope this works out, you and your family have been great for Boston.
Have a great Thanksgiving with your family.
GO SOX!!
I heard on the news tonight and I was thrilled. Moving your family is so hard, especially if it’s only for a year. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, having done it twice myself. My kids are still mad about it.
I am excited for you and your family. Staying in Boston for the end of your career is a great boon to the Sox and Sox nation.
Excellent news!
Hey - Congrats!
After 5 years, Just left Falmouth, Cape Cod returning to Wash, DC. Interesting here to see how many people are now on the Sox Bandwagon. Prior to you coming to Boston it was really a fun, sadistic, we will probably lose scenario.
You said from the Get Go,…..”not just one World Series….”. I don’t think at the time you knew what you were getting into. Now, you are HERE. So, relish the time with ‘04 and now ‘07. You really have something to cherish, and, with a new contract, so do the rest of us Sox fans. ;}
Thank you!!!!
Pete….now, from Arlington, VA
Thanks for the upate Curt. That is awesome news!
I know you were reluctant to discuss the progress of your talks with the Red Sox but it just seems too perfect to see you finish your career in Boston. I am so gla that coming back for your final year in Boston is as important to you as it is to your fans. What could be more perfect than that?
Best wishes to you and your family Curt. Here’s to hoping we see
you and Mike Lowell signed with the Red Sox very soon!
Curt, one question, After your retirement in 08, do you plan on becoming a pitching coach? I think if you did that for 5 years in Boston, with 5 years in a player role, you could be eligible for your #38 getting retired in Fenway. Any thoughts?
Hey Curt…this is the best news we’ve had since winning the Championship…I think a lot of people , including Gordon Edes, who said it on NESN, thought maybe you wouldn’t be back next year…I think the two most important off-season moves HAVE got to be signing you and signing Mikey Lowell. Having your veteran leadership, and being able to pass that on to the younger guys, is going to prove invaluable. Not to mention, what your family does for charity is beyond the call of duty. Thanks for all you do man, and for giving RSN moment after moment of , well, MOMENTS.
Let’s get signed.
jackson
Curt,
Best thing Theo could do is keep you on board. I know that D-bag Dan Shaughnessy would love nothing more than to see you. I can’t wait to hear him whine once the deal is official. Glad to have you back…..
Curt, I hope you work out the details with the Sox. I love that you want to stay and think you are a HUGE asset to the team.
But I think the only contract that works for both sides is an incentive based one. In my opinion, basing success on a single incentive factor is not wise. This is why I came up with the 3 point incentive program. Fill in the numbers with what you think is fair but I think this could be a great structure you could use in your negotiating.
Essentially, if you dominate, you make big $$. If age finally gets the better of you (hopefully not), the Sox have flexibility and aren’t tied to a huge number.
In my example, your 2006 season (3.97 ERA, 15 wins and 204 innings) would earn you $14 mil while 2007 would have earned you 10 mil. Here it is…
Base Pay: 9 million
ERA INCENTIVE (min 140 IP)
Under 3.00: 2 mill
3-3.25: 1.5 mil
3.25-3.5: 1 mil
3.5-3.75: 750K
3.75–4: 500K
4-4.5: 250K
WINS INCENTIVE
11-13: 500K each
14-17: 750K each
18+: 1mil each
IP INCENTIVE
150-170: 500K
171-180: 750K
181-190 1 mil
191-200 1.25 mil
200+ 1.5 mil
Top 5 MVP
Top 5 Cy
Good Luck
Correction…..Dan Shaughnessy would love nothing more than to see you go.
Hi Curt
man is that great to hear.I had been considering what it would be like for you not to be here next year and it brought me in mind of when Luis Tiant left.
i knew that they could make up for your considerable talent with another pitcher via free agency or a trade but like losing El-Tiante it would have been like losing a piece of the heart and soul of this franchise.
so heres hoping you and Theo get this thing done
Woody
Thank goodness! :o)
Curt, I know you run a family show here so I don’t expect you to approve this comment but the only two words that come to mind when I read this as a Sox fan are:
@$!# yes.
(Will continue to wear my 38 jersey with pride regardless, thanks for the 2 rings)
Well, well, well… I couldn’t sleep and got up just to browse a bit and to play some WoW and see this. I’d say, “GREAT NEWS!” but won’t until it’s finalized and you are returning. ; ) I hope a contract agreement is announced later today and we can see you back in a Red Sox uniform - and you won’t have to pack your family up and move…. Having you retire in a Red Sox uniform would be wonderful.
Dot those “i’s” and cross those “t’s,” Curt and Theo.
As Larry the Cable Guy says, “Git ‘er done!”
; )
hey curt,
thanks for coming here to boston and helping to deliver two world series championships. and thanks for sticking around for more. your leadership and your faith has set an excellent example for many in this community. and don’t worry about your critics - if the writers in this town were half as good at their jobs as you guys are at yours, the newspapers would be full of joyous illumination… anyhow, you are the man! and thanks again for everything.
jeff
Curt,
Thanks again. Looking forward to see you pitch next year. Please keep saying things that bother Shaughnessy. It’s nice to know your very presence will drive him nuts.
So happy to hear that things are moving along well in discussions with the Sox brass. I also think it’s incredibly cool that you’re representing yourself in these talks. So often these days, negotiations get screwed up by faceless interactions, agents who are out to deceive, and above all, misperceptions. Hopefully, both you and the ownership will be able to see where one another stand and come to a place that’s mutually satisfying.
It’s amazing what you’ve done in your time here. That letter from 2003 was totally eye-opening, and you’ve more than held up your end of the bargain. Finishing your career here seems like the only logical endpoint. And what a mentor and example our young pitchers will have with you remaining in Boston for another year. This team is built so well right now, one can’t help but think that the future looks incredibly bright–this on the heels of what was just an amazing season to watch as a fan. Thank you for all of your hard efforts.
curt, im a die-hard redsox fan fan living in upstate new york…..this is the greatest news…..you are the most professional, classy and clutch pitcher any team could hope to have…these 4 years have been a pleasure…..and to have 1 more….just outstanding….again thanks for the thrills and congrats and another ring….with maybe three rings on the horizon….
Hi Curt,
I grew up as a Red Sox fan in New England and experienced the emotional scarring that comes with the territory. I had always waited for the day when we would win the Series, and never imagined that I’d see it done twice in my lifetime.
As a lifelong Sox fan, thank you for all you have given for Red Sox Nation. We all hope to see you again on the mound next year guiding us to another title. Fenway Franks taste so much better in October.
thanks again
Dan
This news made my day! What a career!
This is really very good news. Glad you’ll be back. Your playoff performances this year were outstanding.
Now the Sox need to sign Mike Lowell too.
Curt Great news that you will end your career in Boston!!!!!!!!. I am so Happy for you and your family. Curt win another World Series next year. You are NUMBER ONE CURT. Curt could I get a copy of the video you taped of the World Series victory parade? How would I get a copy from you or another player that video taped the victory parade. Could you email me and let me know Curt I would like a copy if you could please? My email address is duderiley2005@gmail.com.
Jeff
Awesome, Curt. Get out there and lead those young kids to another ring!
I was glad to see Wakes’ option get picked up. I know nothing lasts forever, but man, it sure seems like his career with the Sox has. I got married just months after he joined the team. It’s hard to imagine the Red Sox without him. Only thing I can compare it to is the Bruins without Bourque.
Nothing lasts forever, so I am going to just keep enjoying all this hometown winning while it lasts.
The question is, who will lose the next game, the Patriots or the Red Sox?
This would be a win-win-win-win for the Schillings, the Sox, RSN, and all of our beloved New England.
Beyond the ERA and big game wins, the biggest hunk of Curt’s value, a hunk that can’t be over-estimated, is the knowledge and work ethic and overall example of excellence that he provides for all the younger players.
We’ve been blessed to have you here up to now, and this would be extra frosting on that special cake.
That’s such good news. The thanksgiving theme was appropriate. It would be the best story in present day sports if Sox mgmnt.could “sure” everyone up before the holidays. What a stunner that would be.Congrats Kurt for you and yours and I hope all goes well.
That is great Curt, thanks for the update.
Carms
I jumped out of my seat and immediately ran downstairs to tell my roommates when I heard the news. 13 million congratulations on your new deal! Can’t wait to see you out on the field at Fenway in April!
(I’m also glad that the last time I’ll see you pitch won’t have been September 5, when we lost to the Blue Jays)
Curt, I was a huge fan of your bluff and scaring the sox( free agency). JK I would want nothing more then to see you finish your career in Boston. Thanks for everything
Montague:
Thought I’d call you by your middle name to catch your attention. I have no doubt that you’ll run for office some day. Those that detract from your extroverted self and ridicule the overt nature with which you open yourself and your family to a set of values and a community - well, in the long run, I think you’re bound, not for the press box or studio set of gameday analysis, but on the issues the affect the lives of everyday people.
That notwithstanding, there is the final year of a long storied career that has yet to be played out. And yes, it should and must be played out in Boston.
Do you have 98 mph stuff anymore?
Theo and the baseball people know the answer to that. And so does everyone else.
It ought to be said though, that if you shed a little weight, and maintain some vigilance in the off-season, you ought to be able to curl 91-93 when needed for 2008 (author’s prejudice here on off-season training).
Still, there is everybody and his brother in the SHOW who can dish the same speed - but not to the same October effect. When the autumn visits the leaves and confines of Henry David Thoreau make their colors manifest, there are (factually) few people that rise to the occasion of pressurized focus and tenacity.
You and Randy ended the Yankee dynasty of championships is 2001. As a former Seattle man (now living in Tokyo), I always favored Randy to you. But it was clear that the both of you, (disparate personalities, but similar guts and raw talent), both pushed - and helped - one another by your tenacity and competitiveness. Randy Johnson doesn’t get into the Hall of Fame without Curt Schilling breathing down his neck during a mutual Phoenix tenure (on the scale of achievement).
That is simple fact. (Get a few drinks into Randy, and he’d probably admit that and more).
You had a pivotal role in ended the existential crisis afflicting Boston for generations. Not once, but twice.
If all you and your family are asking for is a one-year contract, it can and ought to be sustained. Sign the deal.
You’ll have to bear the typos of that last entry (poetry of Thoreau included), but I trust that you gather what I intended to iterate.
Be well, and I look forward to seeing Schilling in a Boston uniform in 2008.
Hey Curt,
I’m praying that you have a great season next year and that you get the end to your career that you want, whether that be after just one more season or more! Boston loves you and good luck with your contract!
I was beyond excited to hear about you getting to sign for another year..I think that is the best thing they could have done! I can’t wait to watch you for one more season! Congratulations!!!
Curt, As a redsox fan since 1967 I want to say thankyou for bringing not only one but two world series to Boston in my lifetime. It seems that Redsox management have finally got it together. All the years under the old regime (Sullivan) were dissappointing. It is not money that wins a championship but pride, dedication and hard work. (Celtics 1984). You and your teammates have demonstrated all of those qualities. You are a great mentor for the new guys and the Redsox would be making a huge mistake if they don’t sign you. You must be very satisfied with all you and Shonda do for ALS. Even though we have never met you seem to be a good decent man with great family values. This is the mark of a great champion. Keep up the good work and I am rooting for you all the way. Mark J.
Curt,
I was really excited when I heard the news that you and the sox were reportedly close to a deal. I pray that this works out. I will wait for the official announcement though because in 2004 espn was reporting that Pedro had reached a deal with the sox and then the next day it was announced that he was going to the Mets. I really want to see you stay in Boston. If you do stay then they can concentrate on signing Mikey Lowell and the others. I would love to see most of our team intact for 2008. You guys have great chemistry and like they say if it isn’t broke don’t fix it. We had and have a great team that is why you guys are world champions. Best of luck. I already miss being able to watch you guys. Wish it was time for next season to start. I am going through RedSox withdrawal.
Ah, what excellent news to wake up to on a rainy Tuesday morning.
Today’s My Birthday and I knew I would get MY WISH, SO Happy for You, Curt and for Your Family, I knew you would be coming back to Boston, You never really left. It’s happening on My Birthday!!!!!!!! I know it, I know it!!!!!!! SO Very Happy, Never wanted You to go anywhere else #38!!!!!!!!!!
Blessings to You and The Family!!!!! Thank You Boston Red Sox, You made the Right Decision!!!!!!!!!
REDSOXMARYT.
Mr. Schilling,
This is great news for all of your fans! We all look forward to seeing you next year as part of the Sox. Hopefully all goes well, thanks for making baseball such a great sport.
Curt,
This is great news. We all in Maine have our fingers crossed.
Now all we need is good news about Lowell and our hearts will rest a lot easier.
Good luck in 2008!!!!
Deb
Curt,
Congrats!! I’m glad things worked out for you and your family!!
Are you going to extend an invitation to Dan Shaughnessy to watch you ink the new deal,… or,..are you going to send him a sympathy card?
We Love You Curt!
Hello Kurt,
Great news. Don’t sit around eating donuts all winter… stay in shape and make this your best year ever. I see 18 wins with this team.
J00it
Hey Curt,
I am a huge Phillies fan and I would love for you just to see how much they are asking you, you would fit very well here and make Cole Hamels better. COME BACK!!!!!
That’s fantastic!!!! You belong here in Boston!
Curt,
Let’s also cut to the chase here,…are you planning to work in some sort of fashion for the Red Sox organization after next year? I’m sure the Sox would welcome your help with the pitching staff…
Curt, I don’t think athletes are roll models & our kids should not idolize them. But when my Seven year old son & I watch you on T.V. I can say son there is a class act.
I hope your coming back.
Git -R- Done!!!! (Lots of thought went into that one)
Curt,
It’s been wonderful having you here and Boston and every true Sox fan knows we would still be without a World Series Title without your relocation from Arizona.
I personally very much appreciate your foresight and your ability to see that a one-year contract is the best option for you right now. Too many times you see players trying to squeeze out as much as they can and it makes them look greedy while ineffective on the diamond. Sometimes its more important to have city-wide family that will always respect you as a person and a player than that extra years worth of cash. I also find you a savvy business man and am sure that you will be successful in the gaming business as well.
I know you are still a fantastic pitcher, and I expect as you continue to work with John to focus less on blowing it by the batters and improve your “pitching” ability, you will be tough to hit. Your location has always been impeccable and your ability to keep walks to a minimum is a highly overlooked statistic. The intangibles you add to the team (hell your binders and notebooks alone are probably worth a quarter of your salary), the leadership you bring, and perhaps most importantly to the fans, your ability to eloquently embrace media to keep us informed is very appreciated. To me, personally, your post season performances warrant whatever One-Year contract you could possibly ask for. I think it’s owed and deserved. The “incentives” are on your fingers, two of them.
Hi Curt
You have no idea how happy this makes me! Such good news!
I knew today would bring something good!
Keep us updated.
Kim
Curt,
I cant tell you how happy I am to hear that you will be finishing your career with the Sox. You are such an incredible pitcher and I think you will be a huge asset to the younger guys in the bullpen.
So, lets start getting ready for next season!!! What do ya say? World Series Champs in ‘08 too.
Tom
Keene, NH
WOW Curt!!!
That’s awesome news for you and your family. Things seemed to have turned out for the best the way you knew they would. My heart will remain unbroken! YAHOO!!!!! Now go get Lowell
Good to hear, honestly I thought it would happen-some things are meant to be and that is one of them.
God I hate to even bring it up but since other people have-please please can this Dan S thing end? It’s really silly and pointless. One more year here should be free of all of that. I thought if you left you should both sit down at Fenway or some other place and talk as politely as possible for charity-maybe the Jimmy Fund and ALS. Why drag that on even longer? I just don’t get it-maybe it’s a “man thing” that I don’t get somehow because I’m female, but I don’t think so. I think you are both ultimately better than that. At least if people can’t get along they should just ignore each other and just let it go. Could the Red Sox write that in your contract?
Sorry, just my two cents-and I like you…not a fan of everything you do and say but I remain a loyal supporter and rooter.
That is great news and a relief Curt.
Dedicate yourself in the offseason to put yourself in position to win 20 games.
No one thinks you can do it.
That would be the ultimate way to go out
Hi Curt-
Just simply elated that you will be taking down that silly “For Sale Sign” in the front of your home (at least for another year). What were you thinking?
While Jason is the Captain of the Team, like it or not, you ARE the Captain of this Pitching Staff. You are and have been very critical to the success that we all have enjoyed during your illustrious tenure here so far. Your leadership and experience transcends all that is crucial to getting to a World Series, not to mention the magic you yourself do every five days on the mound. I think its safe to say that all Sox fans hope that after your days are over on the mound (and at least another WS). you and your wonderful family will refrain from ever putting up a “For Sale Sign” up ob your home and make this area your final home/destination. And continue to play a long time active role inside the Red Sox Organization whatever that may entail. A HUGE Thanks for all you have done for the organization, the City of Boston, your wonderful charities, and most of all, being the “cure” for ending 86 years of misery plus another WS!!!!. My late season ticketholder grandfather smiles upon you everyday! Congrats on staying!! Now go help get Lowell signed!!
That’s great news! congratulations Curt!
I am so pleased to hear this news, Curt. I have the utmost respect and admiration for you as a person and as a ballplayer, and I really didn’t want you to leave the Red Sox. I realize that a deal is not finalized, and I really hope that everything works out.
I will be watching and cheering from my season ticket seats!
Pretty good news. can’t have too much pitching, obviously. So, 6 starters, plus Julian, translating into 5 spots. Curt, not sure if you read these comments, but I’d be interested in hearing your own thoughts on how the rotation might play itself out. My own reaction is that, despite the no-hitter for Buchholz last year, he still will have to compete for the 5th spot and could very well find himself starting the year in Pawtucket. Anibel Sanchez threw the no-no for Florida as a rookie a couple seasons ago now, but he didn’t really light up the pitching world this year; same could be the case with Buchholz and having you and Wake back will ensure some stability.
I’m would be so happy if you could finish your career here in Boston. I hope that the Red Sox will honor your contributions by retiring your number at the end of next season. Good Luck and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you iron our your contract today; you’ve earned it.
Way to go out on top! In style-on your own terms, in a park with fans who adore you and coming off of another World Series win. Imagine tipping your hat into retirement after winning game 4 of the 2008 series! Good Luck!
YESSSSSS!!!! Make it happen, Curt. We love you here. I was at your 200 win game, Game 2 of this year’s World Series, and countless others. Thanks for the memories, and the promise of a great 2008.
I have no doubt you’ll have a successful season next year, but I also believe that your impact on our young pitchers will be invaluable. I’m not in the locker room, and I’m not sure how it all goes down, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Josh Beckett does not have the season he did this year without you and Tek in his corner. I attribute his success to your mentoring, and his “stuff,” of course.
On a personal note, I am simply ecstatic that you, and Shonda, will be around to continue your incredible community service, and charitable work. Both of you really had a positive effect on me and my organization this summer.
Thanks,
John, FMC Arenas
Curt,
I find your politics and religion execrable, but you’ve been a damn good pitcher for the Sox, and I’m glad to see you back. I’m impressed by the way you’ve been able to overcome your diminished “stuff” and still be an effective and clutch pitcher. Here’s hoping you continue to be a solid contributor to a championship team and retire wearing a “B.”
I wake up this morning and see that Andy Pettitte didn’t exercise his option and Curt Schilling is about to sign on for one more World Series championship in Boston… I think I might go buy some lottery tickets this afternoon after this morning’s news…
YAY! (Doing a happy dance now!)
vegasdeaner “Correction…..Dan Shaughnessy would love nothing more than to see you go.”
All the more reason to sign him!!
Mr. Schilling, I will add my “Fan-Boy” support to the long list, as well as “undying thanks” for helping 2004 NOT be “a fluke.” I agree that an incentive based contract makes both you and the Red Sox–and fans–happy. You pitched well in the post season–particularly in the critical game in the ALCS. If you JUST did that next year . . . that would be worth it!
Considering all of the money being saved by NOT signing A-Rod.
–J.D.
P.S. Sign Lowell!!
Curt,
I’m very happy to hear that. Glad it seems the Sox are showing you the respect you deserve and see the value of you finishing your career in Boston. See ya next year!
Are you looking for a no-trade clause? I sure would. Facing the realities of another regular season conclude me to believe that you’re going to have to lay low and put up some good numbers to reach the post-season roster. Otherwise, I see you being packaged away. That being said, there’s no one else I’d rather see as a starter in the post-season.
If only Wakefield would retire so we could get rid of that pesky Mirabelli and get a youngster in behind Tek to learn the craft.
Also, which hat do you think you’ll be wearing the day of your induction?
!$@$@#$ great news Curt…..!
Here’s to repeat next season! *cheers*
Glad my nickname isn’t what the Sox management is planning to do. Wonderful news that your signing may be completed soon…it will be a hell of a way to go out in 2008 with 3 Championships in 5 years!
Since the “bloody sock” episodes in October 2004, you will always be the Achilles of Boston! But unlike Homer’s ancient epic hero, you continue to triumph. So it’s truly great news that you’ll be back again next year for another campaign for a World Series trophy and retire as a Red Sox warrior.
That is awesome. Thanks for the update. I am glad to hear things are moving in a good direction and hope to see you finish it out in Boston.
On a side note, what’s with your Steelers running up the score on those poor Baltimore Ravens last night?? Ha ha
Curt,
I am elated to hear you will likely be back. My Dad and I agreed as we watched WS game 2 this year from near Pesky Pole that the most likely way to get you back would be on a one-year deal, but that it might not be enough to entice you. It means a lot to RS Nation that you’d take us on a one-year deal. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done for us these last four years. Game 2 was amazing, clearly you were not dominant with your stuff, but I gained a new appreciation for your craft as you truly ‘pitched’ and rarely ‘threw’ and kept the Rockies off balance just enough. Keep up the great work, and our youngsters Clay and Jon are very lucky to have such a well-versed mentor as #38. Good luck going for ring #4!
You have meant a lot to this city and the fans that make up Red Sox Nation. You are truly a unique individual. Your preparation, desire, & compassion for the game of baseball is something every Little Leaguer in the World should replicate. You are a great role model & mentor. Boston waited 86 years for a World Championship and you have delivered two in four years. You couldn’t have done it without your teammates, and as far as I am concerned, there are several “Red Sox Hall of Famers” on these two teams that have won. There will also be a few “Hall of Famers” on these two teams. I hope it works out that you are back for that one final year and able to walk away with three championships in five years. And you can take that famous “B” on your cap with you straight to Cooperstown! It has been a pleasure watching you over the last 4 years, and I hope you stay for #5!
Ahhh… Curt. That made my morning. I knew you wanted to stay, and I hoped you’d stay, but we both know you have to go where you’re meant to be. And I really, really wanted that to be with the Sox… what awesome news. You really are so much of the heart of the Sox, so many of us would have been very, very sad to see you go (and would have kept tabs on you regardless :-)).
Thank you!!
Curt I want to wish you a Very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ENJOY!!!!!!!.
Jeff
I knew you would never come back to Philly. You sell out.
glad to have you back Curt !
Good Morning Curt,
As I was falling asleep last night, I heard the good news, and I slept very well. But when I woke up this morning and didn’t see the news right away on TV, I was afraid it was only a dream!! Luckily, the reality did set in. I am thrilled that it looks like it will work out for you and for us - the way we all want it to. [The Red Sox management would be very foolish not to want you back - way too many positives, including the important intangibles.] True Red Sox fans have heart - and you have a lot of that!! You, and many of your teammates, are definitely in the big Red hearts of all of us fans. Here’s to even more good news coming today!!!!
P.S. I hope you’ve read all of these posts, and if you are then I’ll add my personal “Thank You” for what you’ve done for all of us Red Sox fans; I’m glad that you’ve enjoyed the ride as much as we have. –Cheryl in Maine
Yay!!!!!!!! That would be awesome!!! We thought you were going to be gone when we read about your letter writing spree. We are very happy things are working out!
Curt my daughter is 9 years old and is your #1 Fan! She woke up this morning and heard on the news that you are close to a deal. She was jumping up and deal and screaming her excitement. Ever since the World Series ended she was very disapointed that she would never see you in a Red Sox uniform again. She has already asked me to get tickets to a game you are pitching in next year. I told her it is a bit early for that. I hope it gets finalized real soon. I am not sure that most of the Red Sox fans really realize that without you coming to this team we would be short two World Series trophies. Good luck to you, you deserve all the good things that come your way.
Curt,
I cannot express how happy I am that you have a good chance of finishing your career in Boston. You are by far my favorite pitcher and I never miss watching your starts. The team is better with your presence.
Curt,
congrats on the new deal and bring us one more title.
Curt,
I am so pleased you are back with the team for another year.
I have a great deal of respect for you and your family.
It’s a blessing as a fan to have you finish your career as a Red Sox.
Congratulations and Good luck in 08.
Hello,
I am very happy knowing that Curt will remain as a member of the Red Sox. He is too valuable as a big game pitcher and as a positive representative of the Red Sox!
Kevin
PS. Does anyone know if Curt participates in comment boxes?
Hi Curt
I heard the news this am that you are close to signing. In my opinion nothing could be better than finishing your great career here in Boston. I have read a lot of your comments about how you and your family appreciate being here and it means a lot to the fans. Your signing should be a priority for the sox and it is refreshing to see that is actually how they feel as well. I will get to enjoy yet another season of watching you pitch and hearing what you have to say. Thanks again for being one of the few guys left in baseball who is a stand up kind of guy.
Greg
As the newest Boston fan…let me say congratulations…as a Christian, let me say I appreciate where your priorities are…that to me says it all…This morning I found out how World Class the Red Sox Organization really was when I called about a young double lung transplant patient, Acacia Cugno (www.lofan.com), and they got right on board to cheer her up…You are staying with a great team, and I will enjoy cheering you on next year to another world series championship. sarahsmom2u2@yahoo.com
DON’T SIGN IT CURT! COME HOME TO PHILLY! DON’T YOU WANT TO COME HOME!?!?!?!
DON’T SIGN IT CURT! COME HOME TO PHILLY! DON’T YOU WANT TO COME HOME!?!?!?!
Boston is spoiled, come back to your roots.
I`m glad The Red Sox are doing the right thing. Looking forward to watching You pitch again in Fenway, Now get then to sign Mike Lowell !!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats Curt
If I am not mistaking, Mile Lowell HAS not filed for free agency yet. If this is correct, that is great news. It means the he is giving the Sox a chance to re-sign him
Curt,
I think it’s great that you will finish your career here in Boston.
You have been an asset to the team when it really counted, and Your Charity work is wonderful.
welcome back!~
-Linda
Great to hear it! I’m so excited. I think that the nation owes you the ability to finish your career here. I’ll be checking back daily for updates–it’s nice to hear them from you and not the press! PS–what do you think of A-Rod and his wishes to come to Boson?
Hope this works out! Boston and the SOX is were you belong!
I found that out watching ESPN this morning. Good Luck!!
man, glad to hear it. hope it all works out.
Just got word on WEEI that you have signed pending the physical.
Congrats, lets bring another WS to Boston!!
Best wishes!
Say it’s so, Schill.
Love to see you stay for one final year, so that a Red Sox cap is the last you wear before taking that big step into the Hall of Fame.
best,
Tom
Congrats on the deal Curt…be nice to see your number up there with Yaz & TW.
It’s official, I think… ESPN reporting a deal is now official.
Congrats Curt!! Where’s your next public appearance, I want a ball signed!!!
Raining here in Jersey - cold, dreary day - didn’t want to come to work. I log onto weei.com and first thing I hear is that Curt’s ready to re-up with the Sox… now that’s the way to start a day! Thank you, Theo!
GOOD LUCK CURT!
RESIGN LOWELL!
Amy
And now that things are finalized with your deal, I couldn’t be happier! Thank you so much for staying!
SUGGESTION FOR CURT’S PITCH FOR ALS:
Curt, I would love to get involved - I have no problem donating to charities of my favorite athletes. However, I can’t afford to pay for everything up front; if you could have a monthly donation or something like that, that would be greatly beneficial. I understand that would mean more work for the staff, but I thought I’d pass this suggestion on.
Amy
Sweet! Let’s win another WS in 08!
Yabba dabba doo! Looks like we get you back! Thank you Thank you Thank you!! Great letter and so prophetic! The Schilling family is beloved to Red Sox Nation and I thank God for sending you to us!
Curt
That is great news to hear. Do us all a favor and tell Theo he needs to get Mikey signed as well. I know he is working hard on getting both of you signed and I am glad to hear that your contract is basically done. Look forward to hearing the official announcement some time in the next few days.
This is a self-explanatory email I sent Sean McAdam of the Providence Journal today. I hope it sums it up and good luck to you.
Dear Mr. McAdam:
I read your article about the Sox’s prospective re-signing of Curt Schilling with delight and not a little disbelief. Do you really believe the Sox will sign this icon to provide the starting rotation “depth” in case Wakefield or Bucholtz falter? Do you honestly think these two will round out a starting threesome of Beckett, Dice-K and Lester? There was actually some debate whether Lester would even be added to the post-season roster. Do you now think his performance in the deciding game of the Series has vaulted him from the “bubble” to the third spot in the starting rotation?
Yes, it is true that Curt Schilling can’t bring the same heat he used to and the discussion about how this 41-year old has “re-invented himself” has gone on ad nauseam and, yes, he only went 9-8 this year after six weeks on the DL. Having said that, he still posted a 3.97 ERA for the season and went 3-0 in the playoffs. He is rumored to be considering a contract with a $6 million base salary with a bunch of incentives. Of ALL the pitchers on the Red Sox staff (including Beckett), can you think of anyone more likely to approach an incentive-laden contract with more steely determination and laser-like focus than a Curt Schilling? Do you think he’s going to sign an incentive-driven contract in anticipation of being a sixth or spot starter?
Curt Schilling’s body may betray him next year. In that case, the Sox will have taken a $6 million gamble on him. The much more likely scenario will be that be the rotation’s third starter and will be given extra days of rest and occasionally miss a turn while a younger pitcher subs for him. I see him getting 24-28 starts next year and going around 12-8 (or better). The like of Tom Glavine, Gary Maddox and John Smoltz do not end their careers as part of a starting rotation’s “depth” and neither will Curt Schilling. ‘Nuff said.

Just got an email that you and Sox made a deal
Wooooo Hooooo Hoping its true
Everyone one I know would love to see you finish your
career in Boston and get to see you in action one more
year.
Enjoy your time off and have a very happy and safe
holiday season.
Curt,
I am so glad you are making steps to remain in the Red Sox organization.
Watching you play ball and watching the manner in which you live your life is an inspiration. The way you approach your pitching can be used by other people to approach whatever they do in their lives. I am a better musician because I have learned from your dedication to your craft. I hope that your actions encourage other players to stay with their teams. I know that every player has to make the best decision for themselves and their families, but it is nice to see players such as yourself, show dedication to their teams and their fans. Thanks again.
Mike
Thanks Curt for the good info on staying. I don’t always agree with what you say when I listen to you on the radio but it’s nice to have somebody willing to express honest opinions to the public versus the clandestine atmosphere we sometimes have to deal with. Your involvement in the community and in charities is what is important in your time here. We all can appreciate that you are a helluva pitcher but you took this community to heart and made more of a difference in regular people’s lives. For THIS is the reason that Red Sox Nation should be thanking you. Now sign the darn contract and help get Lowell signed!
Mike
Welcome back schill. Its amazing to see a veteran player of your caliber to take a pay cut to stay in a place where he is loved by many, and respected by the rest. On the field you are a legend, off the field you are a hero to many men, women and children. Thank you for your commitment to The Fans,The City and the entire Red Sox Nation.
Curt is back! Awesome man, this is just great. I think the price is a perfect compromise and I couldn’t be happier that you have signed so early in to the off-season. You’re the man, Curt…I’m really looking forward to being able to see you retire as a Red Sox.
Thanks for everything.
PS: Say Hi to Bob for me. Drizzt FTW.
just saw the news flash. “Schilling back for another year”. Thanks for everything you have done for sox nation. Some of us knew you had it in your heart to stay and this just proves it. We would not be here without you.
Curt - Today’s my birthday and you made my day!!!! This born and bred Sox fan now living in Tulsa, OK is thrilled your last year as a pro is as one of my boys!! Congratulations on the deal.
Here’s my question: Our best friend’s dad was diagnosed with ALS earlier this year; the doctors at Mayo have written that he needs a motorized wheelchair as this awful disease is hitting him hard and fast. The insurance company turned him down. What can we/they do? Thanks for any insight.
Again - THRILLED to hear you finish out your career with baseball’s greatest!! Thanks for a great year.
Mr. Schilling,
I read your blog fairly regularly but have never posted a comment (and rarely do, as a matter of course). But I wanted to do so today to say that I’m very, very happy that you’re likely to finish your career in a Red Sox uniform. Your love for Boston and for its baseball team is much appreciated. Your honesty and sense of accountability are even more greatly appreciated. While I don’t always agree with your views, I admire you both as a person and a pitcher. Extremely glad to have you on board for another year!
D.
I’m happy to see you end your career as a Red Sox player. Take care of that body and kick some butt in your final season!
please resign with the sox. id love to see u retire as a red sox you are an unbelieveable person and player.
Curt,
It’s being reported that you have reached a preliminary agreement on an $8 million, one-year contract. Congrats, and let me be the first to say that RSN is honored to have you for the final year of a storied career. Let’s make finsh it off in style !!
I think I even heard Shaughnessy clapping from beauty salon during his monthly perm treatment!!!
Very happy to see this post. I hope the next one annouces your with the Redsox next year!
Kathryn
Curt:
I’m glad it’s working out. The Sox (and Red Sox Nation) needs you.
Thank You Curt for allowing Boston the first chance to sign you for another year! I am so psyched that your staying in the Red Sox uniform. Your continued support in the community is even more impressive than what talents you display on a baseball field. Once again, Congratulations and “Thank you”!
Come on. At least give the Cardinals a chance!! We’re in desperate need of pitching!!! I say at least wait until you can negotiate with more than just the Red Sox.
Glad to have you back Curt, can’t wait for the CHB article tomorrow!
