Curt,
Congratualtions on last years world series and I hope your recovery goes as well as it can. I remember watching you as a phillie as I am from that area. That being said, I admire the red sox players for sticking together but in terms of not taking the field for your last spring training game against the jays, how do you explain that to the fans who bought tickets to that game and were forced to just sit there wondering if they had just wasted their money.

First... to be clear, I think the team handled the situation in an admirable and honorable way. Second... a one hour delay in the Ft. Myers game is close to meaningless within the context of the entire situation. Third... a question: Is there a union representing staff, and, if so, where was it? And if it doesn't exist, perhaps it should.

To sdl1,

If thats the idea you got from my post, then im sorry that you missed the point, i was talking about how the move showed a complete lack of respect for the 7000 people who bought tickets to the game that day. The FANS are the ones who pay to see these people play, no one else, or did you forget that you are one of those, the autograph comment was because it was just another occasion where i felt like i was being led on by a bunch of multi-millionaires just to placate into waiting for them to do what they are contractually obligated to do, and that is play baseball. and could you point out where i said there were staged signs? oh thats right, you cant. so next time, sit down, shut up, and re-read.

To mudhen,

Im glad someone else on here decided to look at the situation as a whole, rather than shining boots.

You guys did a great thing; you all could have shrugged your shoulders satisfied that you had gotten yours and driven on. Instead you stood up for the people without any leverage and got them compensated. While $40K to some of the higher salaried players may not mean much, I'm sure it means a whole lot to the bullpen catcher making $30K per year and others making less the $100 K.

I am glad that everything worked out well. The picture of Manny bowing to the Japanese press is one of my favorite Manny/Red Sox moments.

I am also glad that the team stood up for the support staff. I think there are people in every organization who do things for the organization but are not compensated for whatever reason.

The world would be a better place if we all remember to appreciate each other more.

I'm proud to be a Red Sox fan!!

I feel every player that refused to play at the scheduled time should be suspended for at least one game. Not only was it disrespectful to the game but it was completely unprofessional to the fans that paid for tickets to watch the game. How many fans make a "pilgrimage" to spring training to see games and they had to wait for an hour. Ridiculous. This is why baseball players should just play baseball. Their union, who has never represented the staff, made a decision to eliminate the stipend. Their union who drives up salaries for them forgot or simply didn't care about the staff. You can try to come out and stand united but the reality is in the process you thought your team was bigger than the sport. That is not acceptable! If one child had to leave the game early for a flight back home because the game did not start on time, it would be one child too many.

It's great that you are looking out for your staff as you should but there is a time and a place and you chose the wrong time and place. Your decision makers (union) who you empower made the wrong decision. Take it out on them not the fans!

KUDOS to the team and the organization for stepping up for those guys. Thanks for doing the right thing and setting a good example of what people should do for each other.

"we had arguably the most famous Japanese born player in history as a teammate"

Not even close - Oh, Matsui and Ichiro come to mind right away, with the first two not even being in the same universe as Matsuzaka as far as popularity goes.

I agree with your position.

The 1 issue I don't get is your teams willingness to not play the spring training game, which had nothing to do with this other than you using it as a bargaining chip. In doing that, you risked screwing who? The fans who paid money to get there to see the game and enjoy their day. I will never understand that. If you want to play the game and then say, fine, you won't budge, then don't get on the plane.

Just my view on that issue..
