The first World of Warcraft Cinematic trailer set a bar that through today had been unmatched in my opinion.
With Warhammer Online receiving a massive amount of attention due to the lifting of the NDA in beta and it’s impending release I thought I’d offer up this.
The cinematic I just watched has raised the bar to a new level. This is, in my opinion, the best trailer, including Movies, I’ve ever seen.
At 4:31 I thought it might be too long but was left wanting more when it ended. I had some reservations about playing that are now gone. I’ll try it no matter what. Not because the movie is so cool, but because of the time and effort put into the cinematic that gives me hope the product will get the same love and attention.
Check it out here and how about that Squig Herder!

OK…so I didn’t understand a word you said in this blog, but I did click on the link. It was pretty good, but I didn’t see any Red Sox action!
Take care, Curt!

I suppose you mean the WAR trailer?
The Wotlk trailer wasn’t that great. I might have to think about trying WAR!

Curt,
I’m a FPS kind of guy, but I might give Warhammer Online a try. I mean, I could learn to play a MMO.

Ok. I’m not a gamer myself - but I see them all because seemingly everyone around me is.
I always enjoy the movies better than the games; the graphics are always outstanding with the movies; and the games seemingly pale in comparison. Take Madden for example, I love watching the extras, the intros, the instant replays; but the game itself still seems visually where it was a few years ago. I know that the functionality is improving, but the game itself is not visually near that same quality as I thought it would be given how phenomenal the promos always are.
But like I said, I’m no gamer.

Its a great game Curt!
Why didn’t you preorder and get in the open beta?! Predview weekend has been active since today at 9am and it’s been a great day of gaming. They really layered in a fantastic sense of humor with the game.

Meh.
I got into the closed beta a year ago, now. After about 10 levels or so, the grind really started to show up, and it became obvious I was simply playing a WoW clone, albeit with no access to a level 70 (or four >.>). I spent a lot of wasted words railing about the games many faults and lazy design, to little avail.
The models are sexy, sure, but the combat feels like you’re playing in mud. The environmentals are decent, but not up to par for a “Next Gen” MMO. Warbands, the heart of the Warhammer Fantasy Battle game, are nonexistant in WAR since they’re banned form entering scenarios as a raid (only groups of 6 can queue together). The ‘talent’ trees, demanded by beta testers who were appalled that each character of a certain class was simply a carbon copy of every other character of that class, were underdeveloped, unoriginal copies of work Blizzard laid down with Diablo 2 some 8 or 9 years ago. The crafting system, which MBJ was sio secretive about yet crowed about so long and loud, is an utter joke, not even ultimately worthy of having been coded into the game.
On top of all this, the game’s saving grace was supposed to be its endgame siege system. You know, the “Living Cities”. Envisioned as a hard-fought RvR extravaganza, they’ve become just giant, PvE public quests, dungeon quests, and ridiculous waves of NPC defenders. And, of course, now there’s only two capitols left - and the dev team absurdly designed this siege system to only play out on the average realm about once a month. That probably won’t bother people too much, though, after they experience the lag, chaos and frustration inherent to them.
Overall, I went into this as a huge, presold fanboi. I’ve played Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and Fantasy Battle since 1989 and 1995, respectively. I have a fully hand-painted Chaos army. I’m an MMO nut. I enjoyed DAoC’s RvR. I formed our WAR guild out of the core of my Counter-Strike clan and began public recruiting nearly 18 months ago. I was a slave to the IP and a fan of the company.
Last week, I cancelled both my and my wife’s CE preorders.
Yes, the game is that disappointing.

hello curt, I met you once in kennett square where you use to get your hoagies on rt 1 at the gas station. Frankly, you were pretty darn rude and you only seem nice when the cameras are on. I hope in say 5 years when nobody cares about your opinion, you can adjust to your life without the attention. I wish no bad will on you and wish you the best, but I am not the only one who thinks your arrogant in person with no cameras around.

I agree, if the trailer is any indication of the quality that this game is going to have, I’m on board for sure. I’m a die-hard WOW fan, but every king has to be dethroned eventually. I guess this will do until Curt gives us the game 38S has been working on.
So Curt, when are we going to get a trailer/teaser, or even just a screenshot from your IP? C’mon man, I can hardly wait.

hello Curt, I waved to you once in Chicago and you acknowledged me.
Now, I never stood in the hoagie line with you, but I did create a spoof blog about you. Why? Because in my mind, as a biased as heck Red Sox apologist, you can do no wrong. C’mon, who else had their skin stapled to their tendon, like ever? BUT, cyber you can do no right. It’s all in good fun…

Fake Curt answers fake questions about absolutely anything in a fake way.
BTW, there were no cameras on you, when you waved up. And really, is “football21″ the best screenname you could come up with or was “football20″ taken?

Hey curt I prefer single player high fantasy games like baldurs gate 1 and 2 and I also like steampunk games like arcanum and fallout 1 and 2. I know with ra salvatore in your team you guys could make an awesome game like that I hope you release some gameplay soon.

Haven’t been to your blog in awhile Curt and I LoL’d. I just finished the War preview weekend. I’ve played a few games and what draws me (or drives me away) is the overall attitude of the players. Seeya WoW, War subscribers are more mature and respectful. Wish you the very best of luck with your recovery and sure hope to see you back!
August 29th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Waagh!
The game is looking really good after playing in preview weekend and the trailer rocks.
The only problem I have with the game is the linear gameplay. I would certainly enjoy a game that had more of a sandbox feel, however, the PvP makes up for it.
The ability to look on the map to see the general location of quests and the PQs are two of the best PVE features.
The many forms of PvP are great and the ability to unlock PvE content through PvP content give it a purpose.
I’ve followed the game for a while and really enjoy how the developers are as transparent as possible, adress concerns, and try to fix problems.
Hope to see you out but be wary of running across a bright wizard named Nireus if you roll destruction.

To the people badmouthing Curt I would like to remind you that everyone has bad days, its called being human. As a manager in a huge sportsbar in Pittsburgh I met Mr Schilling a few times and he was a damn nice guy.
As far as Warhammer goes, Ive been in the beta for over a year and the game kicks serious ass. Great community awesome devs and a commitment to class balance that I have not seen in ANY other game. Its a blast to play and I expect that all serious pvp guilds will be on it making it even better. Try it and you will be pleasently surprised.

Curt,
Maybe we should talk and you can help fund an MMO and do things as cool as this… or better

I’ve been playing WoW since its inception (sorry, Curt, I hate the horde - lol) and have had no interest in playing another MMORPG until now. That trailer looked incredible and I just may have to try the game. ; )
See you in WoW, perhaps. Have fun!

Curt, So happy that rehab is going good. I know its a long process. I have been trieing to keep a positive attitude myself after my 07 car accident. It seems that I have fallen through the cracks of the system while so many dishonest people out there know the game and play the system very well. Yes I am a gamer myself. I usually ply first person shooter online games with a group of old men like me. Average age 40+. Most of my gaming buddies have been trieing to direct me to WoW for quite a while. But while its been a year with zero income (living off savings) I cant even think about getting into WoW. I also just wanted you to know that you are not forgotton and you are still a Boston Hero in my mind anad Im sure many other fans out there. Keep up the rehab and I hope we see you back on the mound in o9. Or involved with the RS org. in some capacity.

Hi Curt,
The video was amazing, but cinematics are one thing, play is another. I took your advice and tried PotBS, and leveled a 50 pirate. The game then became very boring, and I went back to WoW.
I am hoping that Warhammer is as good as the video! However; with WotLK right around the corner, I think I will be sticking with that instead.
I wanted to write, for another reason. I am about to face some fears stemming from the loss of my twins, and the near death of my wife. Before I set out on the journey, I saw a Red Sox shirt with your name on it. I wanted to let you know, that my reason why I decided to wear it.
I know you will be modest, but your perseverance in 2004 that is inspiring me to face some very tough demons. If you could face that, I can face some memories of a nightmarish situation that lasted 3 months, and ended in losing my twins. I wanted to thank you for your bravery in that situation. It goes way beyond sport to see someone with that type of heart.
Thanks again, for giving it everything. You are a true hero.

Curt:
I don’t know whether this has been pointed out elsewhere, but it’s worth saying here & now: You called Tampa Bay’s success this season long before *anyone* else saw what the Rays were about.
I’m remembering last summer or fall, when you were quoted as saying Tampa Bay was going to be a strong team, and that might be a good rotation to mentor. People laughed at you.
Who’s laughing now?
Good call, Curt.
Would love to hear your observations on the season at some point before the playoffs. What have you paid attention to? Which teams or players have surprised or disappointed you? What the heck happened to the Indians and Tigers?
best,
Tom

They have some top-notch animators, these cinematics are amazing — think this was all done in Maya? — pretty big difference, though, between cut scenes and actual rendered gameplay, and it’s hard to tell much about the game design from these trailers.
You can play a game for art and animation, environment, cut scenes, setting and music… but usually only for a short while. Thus far (short history, liable to change, grain of salt, etc.) it’s not art and animation so much as end game, economy, social, pvp and gameplay technical issues which create a successful long-term brand. WoW cannot be the final result in this space, innovation will come in game design instead of only in production (I’m not a game designer, but I have a lot of faith in American ingenuity). Just hard to say if War is in that class yet.
Still, it’s obvious from art like this that the game industry can surpass film when it comes to animation, story, sound design and music, which is great for those of us trying to make our mark in this field.

I’m very much looking forward to Warhammer. I’m in a fantastic guild and this game is very well made and I expect it to hold a solid 1 million subs for the first year and possibly do even better than that in the future. It is not a WoW clone and has it’s own unique gameplay that is centered around pvp via the RvR format with Public Quests, Scenarios, and Open World Realm vs Realm. It’s going to be great.
Mark Jacobs, the CEO of Mythic Entertainment, even gave a shout out to your blog on his personal blog in thanks for mentioning his game. Good stuff.
